Sloan

With the rumors of Sloan breaking up, I thought I would never get the chance to witness this amazing band play. However, this was not the only reason that I figured I would never see them in concert. Apparently, the band really hates Saskatoon. I have not heard this directly from their mouths, but one of my friends had a chance to chat with Chris Murphy while he was drumming with The Superfriendz. Murphy just said that he really did not hate Saskatoon, he just hated Louis', the campus bar. The reason for this I am not sure, but I'd imagine that something happened the last time they played there. Despite their distaste for the campus bar, Sloan found it in their hearts to play for their Saskatoon fans upon the release of "One Chord to Another".

The concert was slated for Monday, October 7, 1996 at Louis' Pub on campus with The Inbreds as special guests. The night was sure to be one for the records!

I was looking forward to seeing The Inbreds perform despite the fact that I knew of only one of their songs that was being played on MuchMusic. I thought that anyone that can make such music with only two band members (three in concert) is quite cool.

Since the concert was sold out, my friend and I figured we should get to Louis' early, say at about 9:00 or 9:30. When we arrived we were quite pissed off that the bands had already started. Usually bands do not start until around 10:30, but for some reason, this night was different. We arrived to catch about the last third of The Inbreds' set. From what I saw, I thought that the performance was quite well done. I was happy since I did get to see them play the one song of theirs that I was familiar with.

Following The Inbreds, the capacity crowd started to get anxious for the headlining band. By 10:30, Sloan took the stage and started their set. The true talents of this band could be seen thoroughly as they performed live. The music had the sound that could be truly considered to be artisicly written. The band covered a large amount of songs from "Twice Removed" and "One Chord to Another". I was a little disappointed that they did not play a lot of songs from "Smeared", the album I like the most. All night I was anticipating hearing the brilliant melodic tones of Sugartune, but I was not given the pleasure of such a gift.

During their set, Sloan was constantly giving the soundman a hard time about the sound. Personally I thought it sounded fine and I think that most others did as well, but apparently the band was not pleased. It turned out that their monitors were not functioning correctly, or something like that. Murphy even got the crowd into heckling Tony the sound man after telling us that if he sounded crappy it was because he could not hear himself sing. Despite this, the band sounded great.

Nearing the end of the band's set, many members of the crowd started to scream requests for Underwhelmed. Now even though this was their most popular song, I somehow knew they would not play it. I remember seeing them on MuchMusic talking about how the fans at their concerts always wanted them to play it, but they never did because of the hype and negative results that came with it. Well at Louis', Sloan kept their promise and did not play the song. Instead they finished off I am the Cancer and left the stage waving goodbye as people continued to beg for Underwhelmed. Despite the odd "boo" from the audience, I think that everyone was pleased with this band's performance.
