In Memory of Oona ManSingh Class of 1981
It is with real sorrow that I bring you the news of the tragic death of Oona Mansingh and her infant daughter. After graduating from Sanawar as a standout in every area. Oona went to train as a Social worker. After completing school Oona Moved to the Kumoun Hills with her Husband a doctor and worked to put her theory into practice as a social worker. Living simply off the land she and her husband worked for the upliftment of the people in this impoverished part of our country. Apparently preparing food gathered in the area she and her child ate poisionous mushrooms. Which killed them both. This occured in August of this year.
Oona was an incredible human being. She was very bright, attractive and athletic. A kind and gentle person. She could have become anything she wanted. She was head girl at Sanawar and had distinctions all through her academic career. She captained the swimming team and was a star athlete. Everyone who new Oona was touched by her kindness, humanity and humility. She stood for what is best in all of us and now that she is gone we will miss her. Though it is almost 12 years since I last saw her the image of her is as bright today as it was then. Please put Oona and her daughter in your prayers and thoughts. Her memory is best served by each of us taking time in our communities to better the life of one person. To teaching one more child to read, visiting one senior citizen in a home or whatever else we can do.
I would like to do something else to honor her memory.. the most fitting tribute I can think of is to offer a scholarship in her name at Sanawar for a person from the area of Garhwal that she worked in. Or possibly build a small clinic in the area she worked in or maybe contribute to whatever charity her parents have selected to honor her.
In a quite corner of the Garwhal the world has suffered a terrible loss.
