Title: Oscar Had A Heap Of Apples (SOHCAHTOA)
I. Unit: Introduction to Trigonometric Functions
II. Goals:
- TLW be able to find the sin, cos, & tan of major angles.
- TLW recognize sin, cos, & tan for an angle of a right triangle.
- TLW know how to manipulate sin and cos to find other trig functions.
III Instructional Objectives:
- TLW create a unit circle chart with sin and cos marked for angles which are multiples of pi/6 and/or pi/4.
- TLW find the sin, cos, & tan for 10 of 12 angles given in a right triangle.
- TLW find the tan, cot, sec, and csc of 10 of 12 angles based only on their sin and cos.
IV Student Entry Level: Acute knowledge of the radian angle measurement system.
V Desired Mastery Level: 85%
VI Set:
You've been waiting for it all semester. Now you're gonna get it! We're gonna learn our trig functions today!!
VII Instructional Procedures:
- Introduce unit circle
- mark off major angles
- 0,pi, 2pi
- pi/2, 3pi/2
- pi/4, 3pi/4, 5pi/4, 7pi/4
- pi/6, pi/3, 2pi/3, 5pi/6, 7pi/6, 4pi/3, 5pi/3, 11pi/6
- introduce triangle w/ hypotenuse = 1 inside circle
- opposite/hypotenuse=sin
- adjacent/hypotenuse=cos
- opposite/adjacent=tan
- Label marked angles of circle with their sin, cos, tan
- pneumonic devices
- work examples with hyp. = 1
- q
=pi/4 opp=?? (SQRT(2)/2)
- adj=1/2 q = ?? (pi/6)
- work examples w/ hyp. > 1
- opp=3, adj=4, hyp=?? (5 by Pythagorean theorem)
- adj=3.2, q =60 degrees, hyp=?? (6.4)
- class work examples
- Basic Identities
- introduce tangent as sin/cos
- introduce sec=1/cos, csc=1/sin, cot=cos/sin
- class work examples
VIII Checking for Understanding: During lesson where it says "class work examples".
IX Supervised Practice:
Begin assignment in class so questions can be asked and answered. Walk amongst the class observing work.
X Closure:
Large unit circle on the board. Students come up and label important sin & cos. Will have quiz over circle in a week or so.
XI Independent Practice:
Odd numbered exercises in chapter (select such that there are no more than 12 problems for any one objective.) Adapt directions as needed.
XII Lesson Evaluation: Complete after giving lesson.
XIII Materials and their Use:
- Text book - homework problems
- Board & marker - visual demonstration & class activity (closure)
