When senior Shannon McMurray of Severna Park emerged from the woods for the final 400 meters of the Anne Arundel County Cross-Country Invitational "A" race at Annapolis High yesterday, she began drifting off the trail, allowing Erin Masterson of Annapolis to take over first place. But a race official got McMurray's attention and pointed her in the right direction.

McMurray quickly regained the lead and finished four seconds ahead of Masterson in 20 minutes 1 second. McMurray's victory also led the Falcons to a first-place finish in the team standings with 41 points. Mount de Sales finished second with 56 points.

In the boys "A" race, Dusty Leib of Spalding defeated friend and training partner Chris Foster by 19 seconds in 16:22, leading the Cavaliers to third place. Severna Park placed first with 48 points.

"I've always thought [Foster] has been an underrated runner," Leib said.

Said Foster: "[Dusty] makes me a better runner."

Yorktown's Julia Webb (22:34) won the girls "B" race. Mount de Sales took the "B" team title with 23 points.

Vikings Win Third Meet

Five Woodbridge runners finished in the top 28 as the Vikings won their third meet of the season at the Great Meadow Octoberfest in Warrenton. Mike Layng was Woodbridge's top finisher, placing fourth in the "A" race in 16:10. Teammates Eric Grother (seventh place, 16:19) and Tim Stark (16th, 16:47) followed.

The meet's individual standout was Handley All-Met Bobby Lockhart, who won in 14:56, 1:19 ahead of second-place Dan Antalics of O'Connell. Nathan Brown of Hylton was third in 16:09.

"Lockhart is one of the best distance runners in the East," Woodbridge Coach Jim Rodgers said. "It wasn't even a contest. Everyone else is running for second place after that." . . .

The South Lakes boys and girls teams won the Hagan Stone Cross-Country Classic in Greensboro, N.C. The girls were led by second-place finisher Pat Martagh (19:57), and All-Met Alan Webb won the boys race in a course-record 14:36. The previous best was 15:31.

Lee, Wolfe Excel

Jonathan Lee of Episcopal and Jessica Wolfe of Ireton won the boys and girls races, respectively, at Friday's Alexandria City Independent School Championships at St. Stephen's/St. Agnes.

Lee finished in 16:56, followed by Nick Mazzenga of Ireton (17:13) and Nathaniel Elberfield of St. Stephen's/St. Agnes (17:19).

followed by Ireton (48) and St. Stephen's/St. Agnes (54).

Ireton took three of the top four spots in the girls race, with Wolfe finishing in 20:35, followed by teammate Claire Conron (20:59) and fourth-place Megan O'Donnell (22:19).

Episcopal won the boys team title with 26 points, and Ireton's girls won with 24 points.
