Sigma Kappa Chapter History

Sigma Kappa Sorority was founded in 1874 by five women at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Colby College was the first college in New England that admitted women along with men students. These five women were the first to be admitted. Although they were admitted to the college, the women still faced being looked down upon by professors and men students. They eventually joined together to form a support group and home away from home. Today that group has expanded and blossomed into Sigma Kappa Sorority.

The Omega chapter of Sigma Kappa was founded on the Florida State University campus in 1920. At the time, Florida State was called the Florida State College for Women. Men weren't admitted into the university for many years. At first Omega didn't have a house. They held meetings and social gatherings in a small house just off campus. Finally, in 1929, their house was built. It has been home to thousands of Omegas ever since.
