Irish News Cup 1st Round 1st Leg Tuesday 19 November 1996 ![]()
Brendan Aspinall will miss at least Coleraine's next match after being sent off four minutes from time as the Bannsiders went down by the odd goal in three. There is some confusion, however, over the referee's intentions over the incident as Aspinall was shown a yellow card before the red, even though he had not ben previously booked. Coleraine made three changes for the journey to Ballybofey with Greg O'Dowd, Robbie Brunton and David McCallan all rested. Finn Harps took the lead in the eight minute when Aspinall tripped McCann inside the area, and Stuart Gauld made no mistake from the penalty spot. Coleraine were stung into action by this setback and Davy Platt did well to save a McAllister volley before the visitors equalised after 33 minutes. Ollie McAuley released Michael Surgeon down the left and his cross fell for Sam Shiels who teed up Goosey Young for his first goal of the season. Coleraine had more of the play after the interval and McAllister was denied again when Gauld cleared off the line after Platt had dropped McAuley's cross. Then, after 53 minutes, Platt was called into action again as he did well to deny Shiels. Despite this pressure, the home side had the last word with a quarter of an hour remaining when ex-Coleraine player John Quigg was given a free header from a corner to set up a second-leg advantage for the League of Ireland side. As Coleraine pressed forward for another equaliser, Finn Harps broke out and Aspinall tripped Heaney as he made a desperate lunge for the ball.
