Coleraine 1 Glenavon 1
Smirnoff Irish League
Tuesday 10 December 1996

Coleraine stay 7 points clear at the top of the Smirnoff Premier Division after this home draw which breaks the recent sequence of defeats. Even more importantly, it breaks the recent run of below-par performances, because this was one that got away.

In the first half, Coleraine were by far the better team, with Eamon Doherty prompting through the centre and Johnny McIvor raiding down the left wing. All this was missing from the first half performance was a goal, and the best chance was squandered by McIvor, who skipped past paul Mooney and cut inside before shooting against the legs of Dermot O'Neill in the visitors' goal. Indeed, this was the pattern for most of the first half, with Glenavon pressed back into their own half while the home side tried to find the key to unlock the massed defence.

The second half opened with the Coleraine's first league goal in three games. McIvor made another excellent jinking run down the left and when his cross was cleared, Conor McKeever picked up the ball and again attacked the left wing. This time the low cross ran behind Sam Shiels and fell nicely for David McCallan to volley home from 10 yards. Instead of polishing the game off, Coleraine inexplicably sat back and invited the visitors to come at them. Although Glenavon failed to create much in the way of clear chances, they dominated possession for the next 20 minutes and it was no surprise when they scored after a goalmouth scramble. Lamont pushed away Glendinning's cross and after Robbie Brunton cleared Mulholland's follow-up shot off the line, substitute Trevor Williamson scored from close range. This seems to spur Coleraine forward again, and they dominated the remainder of the game. McIvor had two or three good runs down the left but weak finishing ensured that the spoils were shared.

1. Wesley Lamont
Came sharply off his line on a few occasions and made a good save from a lob near the end. Couldn't be faulted for the goal. (7)
2. Oliver McAuley
A close contender for Man of the Match. Ollie sees more than his fair share of the ball for a full back, and rarely wastes posession. (8)
3. Robbie Brunton
Unspectacular but steady. (7)
4. Brendan Aspinall
Brendan's passing still leaves a lot to be desired, but he was commanding in the air. (7)
5. Stephen Young
Another close contender for man of the Match. Slotted back into a defensive role with ease and won many important challenges. (8)
6. Eamon Doherty
The Doc's first start in the league since his injury. Eamon began well but tired towards the end. (7)
7. Sam Shiels
Returned after illness, but didn't really look fit. (6)
8. Greg O'Dowd
Most of the play went down the other wing, but Greg played fairly well when called upon. (7)
9. David McCallan
Took his goal well, and kept was a handfull for the returning Nigel Quiqley. (7)
10. Conor McKeever
Another game, another different shirt, another good performance. (7)
11. Johnny McIvor
Man of the Match. If Johnny's finishing had been even half as good as his approach play, he could have had a hat-trick. Gave the Glenavon defence all the trouble they could handle, but ultimately with no end-product. (8)
