Coca Cola Cup 1st Round 1st Leg Saturday 28 December 1996 ![]()
Coleraine started brightly enough with David McCallan going close in the first minute from a cross by Conor McKeever, but they had to wait until the half-hour mark for the opening goal. Paul Gaston was the architect, moving forward from the back to exchange passes with McCallan whose shot spun off the unlucky Newry keeper and bounced over the line. McCallan almost doubled the lead two minutes later when he just failed to connect with a cross from Cunnington. Newry came back into the game towards the end of the half, and their first real chance was presented by Brendan Aspinall who slipped to allow Peter McStravick an opportunity to hit one from 20 yards but his shot whistled over the crossbar. Newry did manage an equaliser just before the interval when Aspinall tripped Gary Hughes inside the box and Ollie Ralph made no mistake with the penalty. Worse was to come as the second half started, because Newry took the lead when Hughes cleverly lobbed the recalled O'Hare from 20 yards. This spurred the visitors into life and after 62 minutes McCallan was once again on target. Eamon Doherty sent in a cross from the right which the home defence failed to clear, and the top scorer applied the finish from close range. Coleraine just about deserved a winner, but they had to wait until the last minute to carve one out. Conor McKeever sold a superb dummy to Paul Waters before curling a cross towards the advancing Sam Shiels at the near post. Shiels failed to connect cleanly, but his weak finish was enough to steer the ball into the net.
