Newry Town 0 Coleraine 4
Sun LIfe Gold Cup Group B
Saturday 7 September 1996

Coleraine made it a hat-trick of wins over Newry and 7 out of 7 for the season with this easy victory to open the Gold Cup campaign. Coleraine dominated the opening exchanges, but had to wait until the 28th minute for the first goal. A weak corner from Eamon Doherty was touched towards goal by Pat McAllister and when the goalkeeper failed to hold the ball, Michael Surgeon converted an easy chance. Newry rallied towards the end of the half, with Lamont called into action a couple of times, but the lead was never under serious threat.

A minute after the restart, the lead was doubled when Sam Shiels drove a Surgeon cross high into the net, but Shiels limped off shortly afterwards to be replaced by Johnny McIvor. On 67 minutes McIvor jinked into the penalty area where he was upended by a Newry defender. After some debate among Surgeon and Doherty as to who was going to take the penalty, Pat McAllister took charge, and easily converted. Surgeon completed the scoring in the 77th minute to round off another good personal performance.

1. Wesley Lamont
Maintained his recent confident form, but was tested only rarely. (7)
2. Oliver McAuley
Good as usual. As Ollie's confidence grows, so his forays upfield become more and more productive. (7)
3. Robbie Brunton
Steady and effective. (7)
4. Brendan Aspinall
Rarely threatened, but always looked comfortable. (7)
5. Paul Gaston
Dealt solidly with any threat. (7)
6. Eamon Doherty
Good as usual. (7)
7. Sam Shiels
Was withdrawn just after scoring his goal, but had been well involved until that point. (7)
8. Greg O'Dowd
Provided a good outlet on the right-hand side. Excellent crossing. (7)
9. David McCallan
Another barren day, but his work-rate remains high and the goals will surely come. (7)
10. Pat McAllister
Another captain's performance by the midfield general. (7)
11. Michael Surgeon
Man of the match (yet again). Scored two and was always involved. (8)
sub Johnny McIvor (for Shiels)
A lively 45 minutes, capped by the run which earned the penalty. (7)
sub Andy Ramage (for O'Dowd)
Given a run when there was little left to play for. (6)
sub Stephen Young (for Aspinall)
A rare run-out for Goosey. He came on when the game was effectively over as a contest. (6)
