I know some of the Pirates fans think that Martin Brochu is a great goalie. I think differently.

I will be the happiest if I am proved wrong. I just don't think I will be. Sure, he's playing well...right now. Remember Patrick Lalime. 15-0-3 or something for Pitt, and then? Backup bum in Ottawa.

Here are just a few reasons why I'm not happy with Martin Brochu(and ladies, please note that none of them have to do with his character or his looks.)

EXPANSION
If this guy was any good, he would have gone somewhere else. If he's that good, wouldn't Nashville rather have him than the S. Cheese they put in night after night? Maybe Columbus will pick him. Minnesota? If that happens, Swiss Cheese sandwiches for Art all season long.

BACKUPS
Clearly the Caps don't believe in him or they would not keep signing Old Pipe Men to fill the empty seat on the end of the bench while Olie makes like a wall. He's not a kid. He's 26. If he was 20-24, sure, I'd be waiting for greatness. Nothing yet.

Teams like the Islanders are waiting for greatness(Luongo). Teams like Montreal are waiting for greatness(Garon). Philly(Pelletier), Buffalo(Biron) and Phoenix(Desrochers) are all waiting for greatness. Don't forget about JF Damphousse or JS Giguere either. These are all going to be great goalies. Right now, they are really good. Martin Brochu does not belong in this category.

KEEPING OTHERS OUT
By playing him all the time, Charpy has to sit on the bench. And that is where he's going to stay. Charpy might, and I stress might, be fantastic, he might be another Broc...I mean, well, he might not be fantastic. What good did it do us to have Rosati in last year? Nothing! We could have been letting some kids get some time in, but instead we gave guys who are not going anywhere another shot to prove themselves...Sure, Charpy was injured, but he's not injured this year. Play him. Let him lose the job, don't have him waiting for Brochu to lose it.

In closing, and this will be the last I say on the subject, Brochu should be relegated to backup duty. He doesn't have the skills to bring us the Cup, and that is all I care about. Give me the Cup with this team, or trade these guys for guys who will give me the Cup. I've seen enough losing, I want to win. Not just one or two games. I want to win it all. Unfortunately, with Brochu between the pipes, we won't.
