Great Month for Portland Fans
By Paul Cahalane

I'm wrong, I'm right, I'm questionable... Say what you will, all are correct.

I'M WRONG:

Brochu. He's killing my credibility! What a season he's having. The man is standing on his head. Yes, I'll admit it. He's playing great. This is probably the first time in my life I am so happy to be wrong. His numbers are great. He's playing like everyone told me he would. As I told Art, his flopping around on his back, flaling his arms and legs around reminded me of Hasek(clearly no comparision, but a reminder).

Parrish: In the ECHL? I'll say he's better than the Sherrif, but I don't know as much as the GM, so I'm wrong.

Decintas: Maybe he's cleaning the Pirate employees clothing instead of playing hockey.

Better music: Didn't happen. It got worse. Spears? The Show? I loved "Remember..." right after Bad Moon Rising hearing about Brunette and Allison scoring. Now, we listen to a song nobody liked to begin with, and then, UGH, Ozzy.

I'M RIGHT:

Whitfield: Is he on fire or what? If he wasn't human, I'd want him out there for all 2 minutes of the kill. He's proving the B's wrong. There isn't a team in the league who would not want him on the PK. And the offense.. Did anyone else see his speed crashing the net on Sunday?

Boileau: He's finally doing what he was signed for. Playing defense 1/2 the time, jumping in the play when he can during the other 1/2.

Volchkov: Har Har Har. I told you he'd be good this year. Too bad he's already been called up. He'll be back, but look at his points. Did you see him play? That is why he was drafted when he was...

Peluso: He's playing like LeClair. Hit first, ask questions second. Mike is taking his beating in front of the net, but he's also showing speed and finesse. Pray to the Hockey Gods he keeps it up. He won't clear Nelson's 107, but he'll put them up.

Coverage: Sunday night, even though it followed everthing else that happened that day, we were on 13, with 2 highlight goals. Maybe 6 and 8 showed them also, if they were smart. From SportsCenter: And The Captain with a dandy move, sends it to the corner for Moore who one-times it to the battling Mike Peluso, no relation, and he squirts it by the helpless netminder...(We can only hope).

Mr Defense: Nothing required here.

The Captain: As always.

I'M QUESTIONABLE:

Shmyr: He's gotta dance. He's not here to set up Brunette or JP. He's here for one reason. Get it done. He's been getting his Charlie Logan kicked all over the ice until he got the best of Downey. Great fight. Remember, last season, Downey beat up Major, Nordstrom, and Nassriddine(sp). That was the first time I've ever seen that *#$^$^) lose a fight. Do what you have to...

Attendance: I know, I know. I hear you. It'll take a little while for the fair weather fans to arrive, but, as selfish as I am, I want them there now.

2 STORIES FROM THE PIT OF HADES:

First home game... I sit down in my new season ticket seat. I'm seated next to a boy and his dad. I inquire and find out that they are not season ticket holders(Thank the lord). Cynical to the top of the list. First period they question offsides 10 times. "Oh my God, what are they watching, don't they pay the refs anything to call the game right?" They also had a problem with a defensive hand pass. That was enough for me... (They were from out of town). "Hand passes in the defensive zone are legal," I tell them. "I guess I don't know the rules of the minors,"(That was said very snooty) The 11 year old kid says. "Oops, those are the same rules as they have in the NHL. I guess you just don't know the rules. You guys won't be here next game right?" Imagine the rest...

Even worse, and I laugh as I type this, just because this is the ultimate fan, a little tooooooo ultimate to be behind me.

She was a cheerer. You all know them. Great fans. Everything that happens, they yell. Not too much fun sitting right in front of her, though. She often didn't realize that her mouth was full of food. I'd see Whitter steal the puck and I'd hear, "guhhohghf whifferah." She was a great fan, but seeing us get a penalty and hearing, "Fuh wha, heh was uphengughhh" and knowing what was going on, but also hearing the pretzel rattle, it was a bit unnecesary. Just a bit.

A late October update, with a bit of a tangent for those who have nightmares sitting next to you. If you have a great next seat stories, put them up in the message board of this page, and we'll all laugh...

Let's all hope November is as great as this month has been. Let's all hope I'm wrong about Brochu.

Let's all put our hearts out for the family of Payne Stewart, a great golfer who lost his life tonight.

Let's all wish Trevor(my new moniker) a quick recovery. We all love him too much.

Good luck Brochu, I like being wrong.

Until next time,
