Five-time All-Star
Murcer made his Major League debut with the New York Yankees in 1965 and briefly played in the 1965 and '66 seasons before entering the military for two years. In 1969, he took over as the center fielder for the Yankees and quickly became one of the leading players on the team. Murcer was a five-time All-Star (1971-'75), winning the Gold Glove in 1972. After the 1974 season the Yankees traded Murcer to the San Francisco Giants, where he spent two seasons and another three with the Chicago Cubs before returning to the Yankees to finish his career from 1979 to '83. Following his playing career, Murcer became a broadcaster for the Yankees. He died in 2008 after a long battle with brain cancer at the age of 62.
