1980 Tour de France Champion
Zoetemelk won an Olympic Gold Medal in 1968 in Mexico City as part of the Netherlands' in the 100 kilometer road team time trial. At those games, he failed to complete the individual road race and was a part of the Dutch pursuit team that did not advance past the heats. Zoetemelk turned professional in 169 and rode his first Tour de France in 1970, racing every year through 1987. He completed sixteen races, a record. He finished second in the Tour six times, and won the race in 1980. In 1985, at the age of 38, he became the oldest winner of the World Championship road race. Zoetemelk was named the Dutch athlete of the year in 1980 and 1985.
