In 1965 the Boston Red Sox sold the Seattle Rainiers to the Los Angles Angels (soon to be re-named the California Angels) and ended an era of baseball for the city. Los Angeles, which began major league play in 1961, wanted the team to reflect the new ownership and thus changed the name to the Seattle Angels. This ended the local ties which was the reason for the success of the Rainiers and the city was increasing with desire to join the major leagues. Seattle proved long before that they were ready to become a major league city. The Rainiers led the PCL in total attendance from 1938 to 1952 and season attendance in 1945, 1949, 1950, 1951 and 1955. Still being a AAA club for a major league team didn't satisfy Seattle baseball fans anymore and this reflected in the attendance for the Angels. |
