1995 Western Division Champions

"The Mariners are going to play for the American League Championship! I don't believe it....My oh My!!!" Dave Niehaus October 8, 1995

Media Guide for the 1995 season

The team motto for the 1995 season

With the score 1-0 Seattle in the seventh inning, the Mariners erupted for 4 runs off of California's Mark Langston. Luis Sojo hit a bases-loaded double and scored on the same play on a pitchers error.

After the Mariners won 9-1, catcher Dan Wilson rushes the mound to Randy Johnson. The Seattle Mariners head to the play-offs for the first time.

The fans storm the field after the Mariners win a one game play-off against the Angels for the American League Western Division.

Next to Randy is an un-torn ticket from the historic event.

Randy acknowledges his late father after the big win. This performance would also ensure him of winning the Cy Young Award, a first for a Mariner pitcher. His final regular season stats would be a record of 18-2, 294 strikeouts and a league leading 2.48 era.

The first play-off program published for the Seattle Mariners

After losing the first two games to the Yankees in New York the play-offs came to the city of Seattle for the first time. Destiny, though, was on the side of the Mariners and this was the team of "Refuse to Lose". Seattle came back and beat New York twice to tie the series. On October 8th, what would be later considered one of the greatest post-season games ever, the Mariners and Yankees dueled for 11 innings. After the M's scored two runs in the 8th, Randy Johnson was brought in the 9th with the score tied 4-4. In the top of the 11th New York scored one run to take the lead. It looked like the magic was over. "Black Jack" McDowell came in the bottom of the inning to shut the door. Joey Cora and Ken Griffey Jr. hit singles to bring up Edgar Martinez. As the crowed chanted "Refuse to Lose", Martinez hit a double to score both Cora and Jr. to win the game 6-5.

Program from the American League Championship Series vs. Cleveland

In game one, Bob Wolcott shocked everyone by leading the Mariners to a 3-2 win. The Indians tied the series 1-1 going into Cleveland.

Jay Buhner hit a home run to give the Mariners the lead 2-1. Behind Johnson's terrific pitching it looked like Seattle would win this game easily. However, Jay missed a fly ball that allowed Cleveland to tied the game and sent it into extra innings. He later redeemed himself in the by hitting a three run home run and Norm Charlton shut the door to win 5-2.

Cleveland went on to win the next two games including game six against Johnson. The Mariners season finally came to an end. But there would be no sorrow because no other Mariner team had gone this far and knew some day they will make it to the World Series.
