Tips

Position On The Ice

The three most important things about goaltending, as first mentioned to me by Jim Corsy(Goaltending coach of the Buffalo Sabres) are:

1. Position
2. Position
3. Position

Position is where you are in contrast to your net and to the shooter. You have to come out of your net to cut down the posibilities the shooter has to score on you.

Example of cutting down the angle - Illustated by Jess Anderson

Angles are a goalie's best friend. You have to learn how far to come out so you cut down the angle and so that you still have time to get back to your net if there is a pass made. Your body has to be taking up as much room infront of the net as posible. Try lining the middle post of the net with the middle of your chest with the puck. Get in between the puck and the middle of the net. Remember that you are trying to stop the puck from going into the net and not the shooter. If the shooter moves one way and the puck doesn't, follow the puck!!
