Records equalled as Shamrock ladies stay top
28 May 2001 - Records were equalled as the
Shamrocks ladies team retained a share of the lead in the Queensland
Gaelic Football League over the weekend.
Jacqueline Peacock (pictured) scored 5 goals and Joann O'Neill had
8 points to both equal club records in the 35-point win over
Sarsfields.
Peacock tied the single game goal scoring mark set by
injured forward Renee Moynihan over two years ago, while O'Neill's
points total equaled the number set by Peacock just last month.
Kelly Woods, while scoring one point herself, was
outstanding in midfield with precision hand and foot passing to play a
role in most of the scoring opportunities.
The western suburbs ladies side has now won four
straight league matches to be in equal first place with Brisbane Shield
champions Harps. Shamrocks play Harps on Sunday.
The Shamrocks senior mens team - winners of the
Brisbane Shield for third time in four years a fortnight ago - held off
a determined Sarsfields team to win by five points on Sunday.
Trevor Lynch led the Shamrocks with 7 points, followed
by Anthony Lagan on three.
Stuart Meiklejohn was amongst the best on ground as the
Shamrocks mens also remained in a tie for first place, although now
have a bye this weekend.

McCaffrey may be missing for weeks
21 May 2001 - Shamrocks lost more than a game
when they fell back to equal first place in the Queensland Gaelic
Football League over the weekend.
The reigning Queensland champions, and recent winners
of the Brisbane Shield, may be without goal-scoring record holder
Peadar McCaffrey (pictured) for several weeks after he suffered a groin injury in
the club's six-point loss to Souths.
Shamrocks lost 0-1 to 0-7 with McCaffrey scoring their
only point before limping off early in the second half. He will
struggle to recover in time for the crucial match against Sarsfields
this Sunday.
The last time Shamrocks played Sarsfields they lost by
a single point, so will be hoping for revenge with or without
McCaffrey.
Against Souths over the weekend, Glen Carpenter
maintained his outstanding form in goal, while Andrew and Stuart
Meilklejohn again played serviceable roles up field. But the team
lacked scoring punch with three of the starting players from last
week's Brisbane Shield final absent.
In the ladies league, Shamrocks beat Souths by 17
points, with the scoring led by full forward Jacqueline Peacock on 4
goals 2 points.
Midfielder Angie Doyle was excellent wnning possession
all over the field and creating opportunities for others. She scored 1
goal 4 points. Natalie Hughes and Imelda Kennedy were also strong
contributors, and Shirley Jensen was particularly reliable in goal.
Shamrocks mens reserves lost to Souths by 7 points,
despite good play by Brendan Walsh at wing forward.

Shamrocks win the Brisbane Shield again
14
May 2001 - Brisbane's western suburbs Shamrocks club leads the
Queensland Gaelic Football League after winning the Brisbane Shield for
the third time in four years over the weekend.
Willy Shanahan (pictured) scored two outstanding goals in the
second half as Shamrocks stormed home to defeat the previously unbeaten
John Mitchel club by 7 points.
Shamrocks won 2-13 (19) to 1-9 (12) after the scores
were locked six-all at half time.
Shanahan, from County Tipperary in Ireland, started the
second half blitzkrieg with a rare goal coming off a smother of the
goal keeper's clearance. His second goal was a clever punch after a
well-judged pass from player-coach Steve Talbot.
It is Shamrocks' third Brisbane Shield victory in four
years, after back-to-back wins in 1998-1999.
Glenn Carpenter was outstanding at goal keeper,
including a critical penalty save late in the game just as the strong
John Mitchel side threatened a come back.
Another of Shamrocks' Irish imports, Trevor Lynch from
County Cork, was solid throughout the final scoring 5 crucial points.
Shamrocks ladies team overcame a determined John
Mitchel side in a regular league match over the weekend, thanks to
strong second-half scoring from Jacqueline Peacock and Natalie Hughes.
Nicole Duguid and Imelda Kennedy were both excellent in
defense for Shamrocks as they withstood constant John Mitchel pressure
to win by 8 points.
In the mens reserves, Shamrocks unluckily lost to Harps
by 3 points after squandering a second half opportunity to win with
inaccurate kicking. Eugene O'Mara was outstanding in goals to keep
Shamrocks within striking distance.

Shamrocks in a thriller before the final
7
May 2001 - Shamrocks won a single-point thriller in the Queensland
Gaelic Football League over the weekend in final preparation for this
week's Brisbane Shield final.
Brisbane's
western suburbs club beat East Celts by a solitary point 1-12 (15) to
1-11 (14) and now play the favoured John Mitchel club at Willawong in
the final of the Brisbane Shield this Sunday.
Against
East Celts, Peadar McCaffrey grabbed a high ball to score the critical
goal for Shamrocks with just minutes remaining, before team mate Trevor
Lynch kicked the winning point in the last minute, giving Shamrocks the
victory in the opening round of the league.

now play John Mitchel in the final of the Brisbane Shield - the first
round competition they last won in 1999 - but have to reverse a
20-point loss they suffered the last time the two senior mens teams
played.
In
the ladies match over the weekend, Shamrocks equalled a club record
with 22 points against East Celts to win 1-22 (25) to 0-2 (2).

to wait for results next week before knowing if they are contesting
finals of the opening trophy of the Queensland Gaelic Football season
Shamrocks lost their senior mens match to Sarsfields
over the weekend, but can still make the final of the Brisbane Shield

this Sunday.
The Shamrocks ladies team defeated Sarsfields, but must
beat Harps on Sunday to be sure of playing Harps again in the Shield
final next month.
Jacqueline Peacock - a World Cup winner with
Australasia last year - scored her highest-ever goal tally of 4 goals 3
points, and Queensland representative Hannah Humphrys ran from fullback
to score her first ever point, as Shamrocks ladies won by 31 points to
keep their Brisbane Shield hopes alive
Glenn Carpenter was outstanding at fullback for the
Brisbane western suburbs mens team, and Steve Talbot drove in a
sensational goal from 20 metres, but Shamrocks lost by a solitary
point.
Six Shamrocks - David Shakovskoy, Andrew Meiklejohn,
Stuart Meiklejohn, Anthony Lagan, Glen Carpenter and Matt Walsh - also
played in the Queensland mens development squad that lost 3-15 to 0-7
to strong Irish schools provincial team Connaught over the weekend.
Shamrocks ladies are in action this Sunday, but the
Shamrocks senior mens team has a bye and a nervous wait watching
Brisbane Shield scores.
Records tumbling with Shamrocks wins
9th
April 2001 –
Queensland Gaelic Football champions Shamrocks remained in contention
for the season opening Brisbane Shield with a record-breaking win over
the weekend.
The
Brisbane western suburbs club beat Souths by 39 points in a rematch of
last year’s Queensland championship final, to eclipse a host of club
records in the process.
The club
marks for highest score in a game, most goals in a game, and greatest
winning margin, all tumbled as Shamrocks won 8 goals 16 points (40) to
0-1 (1).
The previous greatest winning margin was set way back in 1998.
New
Shamrocks recruit Peadar McCaffrey shared the limelight with a record 4
personal goals in a stunning debut, breaking the mark of 3 goals held
jointly by Steve Talbot, Adrian Darbellay, Eoin Mulligan and Stephen
Muilligan (twice) going back as far as 1999.
The former
captain of the County Meath under 21 side in Ireland left the field
midway through the second half due to injury, but is expected to be
back to full fitness for the Shamrocks next match against Sarsfields at
Willawong after Easter.
The
Shamrocks ladies team also remained in contention for the first trophy
of the season, with a strong 26-point win over Souths.
Shamrocks’
World Cup winners Jacqueline Peacock and Angie Doyle were leaders, with
rookie player Bronwyn Bassett also making a very strong contribution.
