GAA
Trophy just two minutes away
30 July 2001 - Shamrocks fell two minutes short
of winning their second trophy of the Queensland Gaelic Football League
season by conceding a goal in the closing stages of their match at
Willawong over the weekend.
Brisbane's western suburbs club led for most of the
Gaelic Athletic Association Trophy final against the John Mitchel club,
before conceding a goal with just two minutes remaining.
Shamrocks enjoyed more scoring shots but lost by three
points 2-13-19 to 4-10-22.
Matt Walsh was outstanding at centre back for
Shamrocks, David Shakovskoy at wing back, Luke Devitt at goal keeper,
while Tipperary's Willy Shanahan played well across midfield.
In the reserves game, Shamrocks jumped to an early lead
thanks to a goal from David Gall in the opening seconds, but eventually
went down to Harps despite the powerful play of Darren Bell at centre
back.
Kelly Woods played another fine game for the Shamrocks
ladies team, although they lost to John Mitchel.

GAA
Trophy Final in a fortnight
16 July 2001 - Shamrocks have qualified for the
Gaelic Athletic Association trophy final against the Queensland Gaelic
Football League leaders John Mitchel in a fortnight.
The Brisbane western suburbs club moved into the final
after John Mitchel defeated Souths over the weekend, to set up the
rematch of this year's Brisbane Shield final won by Shamrocks.
While the Shamrocks senior team had a bye over the
weekend, the reserves team lost to East Celts despite both teams having
eight scoring shots, and the scores being locked together at half time.
Ronan O'Mahaney scored two points for Shamrocks and was
unlucky to have a first-half goal disallowed, and Chris Bell played
well at centre back.
The Shamrocks ladies held undefeated competition
leaders Harps to just five points at half time, before the score blew
out after the break.

Shamrocks
win inaugural International Rules Shield
15 July 2001 - Shamrocks Gaelic Football Club
won the inaugural International Rules Shield beating Kenmore Bears
Australian Football Club at Jindalee last night.
The International Rules Shield, donated by Councillor
Felicity Farmer of Jamboree Ward in Brisbane's western suburbs,
combines the rules of Australian and Gaelic football.
Shamrocks
beat Kenmore by 3-9-5 (50) to 2-3-5 (26) after leading by just 5 points
at half time.
Kenmore's Damien Joyce scored the historic first goal
in the Shield match, while Eugene O'Mara led the goal scoring with 3
goals for Shamrocks and Anthony Lagan (pictured) finished with 8
overs and 4 points.
Shamrocks share the home ground of the Jindalee Jaguars
AFC as a training venue, and on Saturday night combined for their
annual Irish night, playing the inaugural International Rules
Shield.
Mens
and Ladies teams both in second place
9 July 2001 - Both the Shamrocks mens and ladies
senior teams hold second place with wins in the Queensland Gaelic
Football League at Willawong over the weekend.
Brisbane's western suburbs senior mens team overcame a
tenacious Sarsfields outfit to win by 2 points 1-4-7 to 0-5-5 led by
David O'Malley with 1 goal 2 points.
They retained second place just one point behind
competition leaders John Mitchel, although sit out with a bye this
week.
Shamrocks ladies advanced from third to second with a
14-point win over Sarsfields, winning 5-5-20 to 2-0-6.
Joann O'Neill led all scorers with 2 goals 2 points,
and Hannah Humpheys was very strong at full back.
Individual scoring records for the Shamrocks reserve
mens failed to produce a win as they went down to Harps 3-7-16 to
6-12-30.
Terry Reilly scored 1 goal 6 points to break the total
individual reserves record set by the great Billy Rockett over two
years ago, and the points record set by Stuart Meiklejohn set in the
1999 reserves championship final, while Harold Peacock scored 2 goals
in less than half a game to equal another Rockett record.

Shamrocks
bounce back to beat Souths
2 July 2001 - Reigning Queensland champions
Shamrocks bounced back to form with a strong win over last year's
championship final opponents in the Queensland Gaelic Football League
over the weekend.
Brisbane's western suburbs club beat Souths by 16
points thanks to quality play at half forward by David O'Malley who
finished with three points.
Shamrocks won 3 goals 14 points to 1 goal 4 points. The
result snapped Shamrocks' two game losing streak and lifts them back to
second on the Queensland league ladder.
Declan Law also played well across half forward for
Shamrocks, Dan Fraser controlled the midfield, while team captain Scott
Ingram ventured forward to score two points - the first of his career.
Trevor Lynch led all scorers with five points.
Shamrocks reserves went down to Souths by eight points,
although Harold Peacock showed signs of a successful return after a
long absence from age and injury with three points, Mick Joyce again
played well in midfield, and David Shakovskoy kicked truly for his
first point of the season.

the first time in club history, with a one-point loss to Souths. They

Former
Shamrocks through to All-Ireland semi final
1 July 2001 - Two former Shamrocks stars are
through to the All-Ireland Junior Football Club Championship semi final
in Ireland this week.
Rab Smyth and Marty Coughlan, who were leading players
in the Shamrocks team that won the 1998 Brisbane Shield, will play with
Dundrum from County Down in the semi final against Newry Mitchels this
week.
Both Smyth and Coughlan will both be remembered not
only for their strong contribution to Shamrocks in beating the John
Mitchel club in the final of the Brisbane Shield three years ago, but
also for their leading role in the sing song at the Shamrocks annual
fancy dress party at Hotel Carpenter that same year.
Both
players recently met up with the Shamrocks legendary personality Billy
Rocket in Galway, where they no doubt reminisced about former glories
in Australia.
