Shamrocks winning more honours for the
western suburbs
24 September 1999 - Just one week after Brisbane's
western suburbs Shamrocks Gaelic Football Club won a
Queensland record eight trophies in the one season, the
progressive outfit has won a load of places in the
Queensland representative teams.
Twelve Shamrocks players are representing Queensland at
the Australasian Gaelic Games in Perth, Western Australia,
starting next week.
Shamrocks ladies player-coach Jacqueline Peacock, from
Brookfield, has the added honour of being named captain of
the Queensland ladies team.
Joining her in the side are Graceville's two-time
Australasian selection Louise O'Neill, Joann O'Neill from
Forest Lake, Michelle O'Malley from Springwood, Hannah
Humphrys from Geebung, Denise McIntosh from Sunnybank Hills,
and Camp Hill's Angie Doyle.
David Gall from Seventeen Mile Rocks is Shamrocks' sole
representative in the Queensland Minors (under 18) team that
will be defending their Australasian Championship.
Harold Peacock from Brookfield, Corinda's Billy Rockett,
and two of Durack's most popular sportsmen Sean McAlinden
and Paul McNally, will all represent Queensland in the mens
team.
The world president of the governing Gaelic Athletic
Association, Joe McDonagh, is travelling from Ireland to
witness the Games. The referee from the recent All-Ireland
Gaelic Football semi finals in Ireland will officiate at the
championships.
The Australasian Gaelic Games are staged every year and
includes representative state teams from Australia, New
Zealand, and Singapore.
Brisbane's western suburbs Shamrocks club has an internet
site at www.come.to/shamrocks and e-mail
shamrocks_club@hotmail.com. The new Queensland season starts
in March, and new players are always welcome.
Unglamorous team adds to the record
tally
20 September 1999 - The most successful Gaelic
Football team in Queensland in 1999 didn't grab the
headlines, and probably won't make the cover of Sports
Illustrated, but did set an unprecedented level of success
that has never been done before.
The Shamrocks Gaelic Football Club reserves mens team won
all four trophies in the division this year, including the
Queensland Championship at Willawong over the weekend, for
the first-ever clean sweep of that division in the 16-year
history of Queensland Gaelic Football.
Brisbane's western suburbs Shamrocks Club were in fact
the most successful club in Queensland ever, and including
the Senior Mens and Ladies teams the club won eight of the
twelve trophies on offer, which is also a new Queensland
record.
Shamrocks achieved the success with a club largely built
with new and exciting local Australian talent, coached by Michael Joyce
and captained by the legendary Billy Rockett.
Stuart Meiklejohn
(pictured) of Corinda led Shamrocks in the
Championship Final with 4 points, Calamvale's Luke Devitt
posted 2 points, while 16-year-old Matt Shakovskoy from Fig
Tree Pocket was outstanding in the midfield with 1 point.
Brent Nolan from The Gap was exceptional for Shamrocks as
he continually repelled the opposition to launch the
Shamrocks blitzkrieg on goal. They beat Souths by 5 points
0-11 (11) to 1-3 (6) but their total domination meant it
could have been much more if not for inaccurate kicking.
In the Ladies final, a scare has been thrown through the
Queensland camp for the upcoming Australasian Games with
state captain and Shamrocks player-coach Jacqueline Peacock
from Brookfield being kicked in the knee. She led Shamrocks
with 5 points in a 15-point loss to Souths.
Christine Meier from Graceville was outstanding for
Shamrocks at full back, while Camp Hill's Angie Doyle was
also a very good contributor in midfield. Shamrocks Ladies
won three of the four trophies in their division this season
to lead the race for silverware.
In the Senior Mens final, Easts defeated John Mitchells
by 6 points to grab the twelfth and last trophy of 1999.

prestigious Shamrocks Gaelic Football Club annual awards
announced at Willawong tonight.
Brookfield's Jacqueline Peacock - this year's captain of

Greenslopes' Steve Talbot - captain of the Queensland
senior mens team last year and also in his first year as
Shamrocks player-coach - won his second successive best and

phenomenal 3 goals 2 points to win the Brisbane Shield

The rapid growth of Gaelic Football in Queensland, and
that of the progressive Shamrocks club in particular, is
shown by eight of this year's 13 annual awards going to
first or second year players.
This year the Brisbane's western suburbs Shamrocks

Shamrocks Ladies survive a scare and
advance to final
13 September 1999 - Shamrocks Ladies Gaelic
Football team survived a scare over the weekend to move into
the Queensland Championship Final.
Brisbane's western suburbs Shamrocks trailed Harps by 4
points early, and led by just 1 point mid way through the
second half, before running out 8 point winners 1-12 (15) to
2-1 (7).
Shamrocks now play Souths on Sunday for the Championship
Trophy and an unprecedented clean sweep of all four trophies
on offer.
Brookfield's Jacqueline Peacock lifted her Shamrocks team
with a goal and a point just as Harps raised the possibility
of an upset. Jacqueline finished with 1 goal 3 points from
midfield, as she combined well with Graceville's Louise
O'Neill, who tallied 4 valuable points for the match.
Graceville's Christine Meier led the Shamrocks defence
that now holds the key to gaining a history-making victory
this weekend.
Shamrocks Reserve Mens team also play Souths in the
Championship Final on Sunday, but the Senior Mens team is
not so lucky.
For the second consecutive year, the Senior Mens team
capitulated in the Championship semi final after a dominant
league season.
Having lost player-coach Steve Talbot of Greenslopes to a
clash in last week's game which left him hospitalised with
broken ribs and a punctured lung, Shamrocks lacked direction
as they lost to Easts by 9 points 1-4 (7) to 3-8 (17) ending
their season over the weekend.
Milton's Tim Mapley scored 1 goal 2 points for Shamrocks
to end a successful rookie season.
After a day of upsets, the Championship Final is between
the third and fourth placed teams at the end of the League
season, including John Mitchells - the defending
Championship holders that won just two matches in the
league, and have now doubled that tally with wins in the
Championship quarter final and semi final.
Shamrocks Ladies win their third
trophy
6 September 1999 - Despite going goalless for the
first time ever, Shamrocks ladies moved closer to an
unprecedented Queensland Gaelic Football clean sweep by
winning the Gaelic Athletic Association Trophy final at
Willawong over the weekend.
By beating Souths by just 2 points 0-7 (7) to 1-2 (5),
Brisbane's western suburbs club secured their third trophy
of the season, with just the Championship over the next
fortnight left for an historic ladies clean sweep.
Shamrocks lost full forward Joann O'Neill from Forest
Lake with an ankle injury early in the match after scoring
one point. The scoring was then done by Graceville's Louise
O'Neill replied with 5 points, and Brookfield's Jacqueline
Peacock with 1 point.
Particularly outstanding was Shamrocks defensive unit,
among them Christine Meier from Graceville and Geebung's
Hannah Humphrys.
Shamrocks are also now one trophy away from an
unprecedented sweep of the Reserves Men competition after a
walkover win in the GAA Trophy final over the weekend.
In the Senior Mens GAA Trophy final, Shamrocks
player-coach Steve Talbot from Greenslopes played the first
half in goals, before moving into the forwards for the
second half to be positively inspirational.
Talbot scored 2 points to give Shamrocks the momentum,
before taking a hit that left him hospitalised with two
fractured ribs and a punctured lung.
Souths won the final by a solitary point 0-10 to 0-9 to
displace Shamrocks atop the league for the only time this
year. Shamrocks now have the Championship over the next
fortnight to regain their domination of the Seniors season
that lasted unbroken until the weekend.
