22 September 2002 -
The 2002 Womens Gaelic Football World Cup went to Australasia after an emphatic victory over London in Dublin, Ireland, over the weekend.
The defending world champions, whose squad included two Brisbane Shamrocks players Angie Doyle and Natalie Hughes among seven Queenslanders, beat London 3-12-21 to 0-4-4 in the final to finish the tournament undefeated.
Australasia scored a total of 15-84-129 over seven games and conceded just 0-16, never allowing more that four points to be scored against them in any one game.
Team coach Sean Tilbrook of Western Australia was pleased with his side's clinical performance.
"What I have said to the ladies all week in training was that you don't just last-gasp beat a side, you actually go through all the processes and systems so that when you walk off the park you have demoralised and demolished them on the scoreboard as well," he said.
"All week we have had plenty of possession and plenty of opportunity. Our kicking was a little bit lax I suppose regarding wides and that, but today when it counted they pretty well fit together and got a cricket score. 3-12 to 0-4 was really good."
The back-to-back World Cup champions won the title in its first attempt in 2000 with a team that included three players from Brisbane’s western suburbs Shamrocks club – Angie Doyle, Jacqueline Peacock and Louise O’Neill.
This year Doyle and Natalie Hughes headed to Ireland to defend the trophy, after Peacock was selected but retired at the top at all levels, and O’Neill sat out the previous Australasian Games.

Australasia in the World Cup final
21 September 2002 - Australasia plays in the final of the ladies Gaelic Football World Cup in Dublin, Ireland, this weekend Australian-time.
The Australasian side – including Brisbane’s western suburbs Shamrocks club players Angie Doyle and Natalie Hughes among seven Queensland in the team – play London in the final, whom they beat by just two points in the opening game of the tournament.
Australasia is defending ladies World Cup champions, after winning the title at their first attempt in 2000 with three Brisbane Shamrocks players on board.
The team from down under have so far cruised through the championship undefeated by winning all six matches.
Most recently they beat Rest of Britain by 3-9-18 to 0-1-1, and Canada by 3-14-23 to 0-1-1 to advance to the semi final.
Australasia then won the semi final 015-15 to Rest of Britain 0-2-2 to qualify for the World Cup final against London.
Australasia won the 2000 World Cup final against North America by just 3 points after extra time.
Australasia starts well at the World Cup
19 September 2002 - Australasia has made a stunning start to its ladies Gaelic Football World Cup defense with powerful wins to open the tournament in Dublin, Ireland, this week.
Australasia – including Angie Doyle and Natalie Hughes from Brisbane’s western suburbs Shamrocks club among seven Queenslanders – most recently defeated North America 1-8-11 to 0-3-3, and Europe 5-21-36 to 0-1-1.
That comes after the opening day win 0-5-5 to 0-3-3 over possibly the strongest rivals London.
The win over North America is particularly pleasing, because it was North America that Australasia beat by three points in overtime to claim the World Cup for the first time two years ago.
The Australasian World Cup-winning team of 2000 included three Shamrocks players – Doyle, who is again in the team, Jacqueline Peacock who was selected for this tour but decided to retire from football, and Louise O’Neill who did not participate at the Australasian Games last year.
Doyle and Peacock were photographed by a local magazine with the World Cup at Irish O’Hanlon’s in Kenmore recently, before the Cup returned to Ireland for the tournament.
