History made with unprecedented
treble
28 June 1999 - Shamrocks created history over the
weekend by becoming the first club ever to win the Brisbane
Shield in all three grades in the same season of the
Queensland Gaelic Football League.
Player-coach Steve Talbot from again shone with a
match-winning 3-goals and 2-points tally for Queensland's
leading club in the Seniors final. They won the thrilling
Reserves final with a goal by Harold Peacock as time
expired. And the unprecedented treble was complete with
goalkeeper Shirley Jensen inspiring a match winning defence
in the Ladies.
No club had ever made the Brisbane Shield final of all
three grades before. Shamrocks did that, and went one better
by also winning all three to now be indelibly inked in the
pages of Gaelic Football history.
The day at Gaelic Park, Willawong, started well for the
Brisbane western suburbs club with the Reserve Mens team
beating Easts by 3-points, with determined defence led by
Craig Johnston.
Scores were tied in the dying seconds, before Robbie
White beat two opponents to centre the ball for Peacock to
goal as time expired, adding to his two points earlier in
the game.
Shamrocks Ladies then extended their club record start to
the season with their ninth-straight victory, securing their
second consecutive Brisbane Shield with a 10-point win over
Souths.
Jensen was superb under great pressure in goal, and was
well protected by a slick defence led by captain Trish
McGirl-Duell. Decisive impacts were made further afield by
Jacqueline Peacock, who scored one goal and controlled the
centre with Michelle O'Malley, Joann O'Neill with 2-goals
1-point, and Mary O'Sullivan with a well earned point when
needed.
The historical treble was complete when the Senior Mens
defeated Easts by 3-points, thanks to an outstanding display
up forward by Talbot.
Shamrocks led by as much as 10 points early in the second
half, before Easts battled back to tie the game with
10-minutes remaining. Denis Cronin took a point from a
50-metre free kick, and Matt Walsh another timely point as
Shamrocks steadied to snatch victory.
The historic day was given one last touch of drama with
match officials initially calling the Seniors game a draw,
before a final check gave it to the all-conquering
Shamrocks.

Brisbane Shield treble is
looming
20 June 1999 - A single loss never hurt anyone,
even the Shamrocks Gaelic Football Club on the eve of their
historic three Brisbane Shield finals appearances.
Shamrocks are in the Brisbane Shield final for all three
grades - Senior Mens, Reserve Mens, and Ladies - something
no club in the Queensland Gaelic Football League has ever
done before. They can now go one better next Sunday and win
all three finals for an unprecedented Brisbane Shield
treble.
But at Willawong over the weekend, the Shamrocks Senior
Men suffered their first loss of the season, beaten by
Souths by 15 points.
Dan Fraser, from Edens Landing, played well all over the
ground out of defence for Shamrocks, and puched home his
first score of the season. Dutton Park's Denis Cronin led
the team with 4 points, but the usual sparkling performances
were lacking for Shamrocks, who badly missed their captain,
Jindalee's Casey Graham.
Shamrocks Reserve Men go into the Shield Final after a
stirling 11-point win over Souths on the weekend.
Corinda's Billy Rockett kicked 2 goals as Shamrocks came
from behind in the closing moments to boost hopes for a
Shield win next week. Stephen Ashwell from St Lucia, and Fig
Tree Pocket's Matthew Shakovskoy is his debut game, were
also good contributors.
In the Ladies, Shamrocks extended their perfect start to
the season with their eighth straight win, beating Easts by
41-points. They were led by Louise O'Neill from Moorooka
with 2 goals 7 points.
The finals of the Brisbane Shield are on this Sunday from
12:45pm at Gaelic Park, Willawong. Shamrocks play Easts in
both the Mens Seniors and Reserves, and Souths in the
Ladies.
Shamrocks are the defending Shield champions in both the
Senior Mens and Ladies Shield competitions.
Shamrocks prepare for treble
14 June 1999 - Shamrocks will use matches in this
Sunday’s Queensland Gaelic Football League to prepare for an
unprecedented treble in the Brisbane Shield.
No club has ever won the Shield in all three divisions -
Senior mens, Reserve mens, and Ladies – in the same season,
and Shamrocks are in all three finals on Sunday 27th June.
Last year, Shamrocks created history by becoming the
first team to secure both the Senior mens and Ladies shields
in the same season - now they can go one better and clinch
the unheard-of treble.
But first they play matches this Sunday against Souths
and John Mitchel, in matches which all three Shamrocks
teams will want to win leading up to the final of the first
trophy of the season.
Shamrocks in courageous win
6 June 1999 - Shamrocks captain Casey Graham led
his side to a courageous come-from-behind win to remain
undefeated atop the Queensland Gaelic Football League at
Willawong over the weekend.
The Brisbane western suburbs club trailed John Mitchel
by three points at half time, before unleashing an onslaught
that kept their opponents scoreless after the break.
Shamrocks won by 7 points, 1-11 (14) to 1-4 (7), inspired
by Jindalee's Graham with 1 goal 4 points from half forward.
Shamrocks struggled to get into the game in the second
half, until the deadlock was broken with 2 points from
Westlake's Michael Joyce.
A goal from Graham, followed by a critical save from
Shamrocks goal keeper Matthew Ogilvie from The Gap, then
secured an outstanding win against a determined John Mitchel side.
Denis Cronin from Dutton Park epitomised the Shamrocks
courage, particularly in the second half when their defence
was improved, by kicking 5 points despite some very physical
checking.
Shamrocks now lead the Queensland Senior Mens League with
a perfect 6-0 win-loss record. They also picked up a win in
the Reserves on the weekend.
Shamrocks Ladies secured their seventh consecutive win to
open the season, tieing their Club record start, set last
year.
There are no games in the Queensland Gaelic Football
League over the Queen's birthday weekend. Shamrocks' next
matches are on June 20 against Souths in the Mens, and John Mitchel in the Ladies.
The Brisbane Shield Finals are scheduled for June 27,
when Shamrocks will be playing for an unprecedented treble
of the Mens Seniors, Mens Reserves, and Ladies Shields.
