Shamrocks win a sixth Brisbane Shield
7 June 2003 - Shamrocks won the Queensland Gaelic Football Association’s senior mens Brisbane Shield for the fourth time in six years by beating East Celts at Willawong on Friday night.
Brisbane’s western suburbs club won by two points 1-11-13 to 2-5-11 after leading by three points at half time.
It was their seventh consecutive win over Easts, extending a streak that goes back two years to June 2001.
Jindalee’s Travis Bassett led the scoring for Shamrocks with 1-2, while the best players included Brad Kennedy (Holland Park) and Martin Henry (Paddington) both kicking 0-4, and defender Stuart Meiklejohn from Chapel Hill.
Shamrocks led by five points with five minutes remaining, before an own-goal by quality fullback Joe O’Neill resulted in a thrilling finish.
The success extends the Shamrocks grip on the senior mens Brisbane Shield to a record six wins in the competition, followed by John Mitchels on three, and Harps and Sarsfields with two each.
The match was also notable for the impressive senior debut for Shamrocks of 15-year-old Josh Lowe from Oxley, and that it was Queensland’s first senior mens Gaelic football match played under lights.
It was played in front of a good crowd over around 300, and the trophy was gladly accepted by team captain Paul Rice of Newry, County Down, Ireland.
Shamrocks then celebrated at Irish O’Hanlons in Kenmore where the Brisbane Shield is now proudly on display.
In the ladies Brisbane Shield final, northern suburbs club O’Reillys beat defending champions Harps by nine points 4-8-20 to 3-2-11.
O’Reillys – with former Shamrocks players and Australasian World Cup winners including coach Jacqueline Peacock, captain Natalie Hughes, and founding player Angie Doyle – won the Shield in their first season in the competition.
In the reserves mens final, East Celts 3-9-18 defeated Harps 3-5-14 for their second Brisbane Shield success.
