Shamrocks end Harps 4-year streak

01 May 2005 - Shamrocks grabbed favoritism in Gaelic Football’s season-opening Brisbane Shield when the western suburbs team handed the reigning champions it first lost in 18 months in a thrilling ladies match at Willawong over the weekend.

An early second half goal by Renee Moynihan lifted Shamrocks from a half-time deficit to storm home against Harps by six points – 2-11-17 to 2-5-11.

The result snapped an incredible 21-game winning streak by Harps that stretched back to the 2003 Queensland Championship final, and ended Harps’ 10-game winning streak against Shamrocks that went all the way back to the 2001 Queensland Championship final.

Shamrocks’ coach Jacqueline Peacock appears to be a nemesis of Harps, because she was the coach in both those championship victories – the 2001 match being the last game that Jacqueline guided Shamrocks against Harps until this season.

Narelle Saward (1-6) and Renee Moynihan (1-3) led the scoring for Shamrocks on the weekend, while it was the team defense that proved most decisive in overcoming a 0-4 to 1-4 half-time deficit.

Best for Shamrocks were Jacinta Mottram, Monique Ralph and Casey Sharpe.

In the mens competition, Sam Porter kicked a career-high four points as Shamrocks B beat Sarsfields by nine points, 2-13-19 to 2-4-10.

Billy Rockett and Brad Kennedy both kicked 1-1, with Kennedy, James Marshall and Robin Arman were best for the victors.

Great contests are assured next week with all three Shamrocks teams playing good Easts Celts teams at Willawong.

Three weeks of records

17 Apr 2005 - Gaelic football records tumbled for the third consecutive week as the Shamrocks ladies team continued its perfect start to the Brisbane Shield season at Willawong over the weekend.

Led by best-on-ground Alycia Clayton, Reanna Browne and Narelle Saward, Shamrocks won by a club-record 51 points against John Mitchels, which had been expected to seriously challenge the south-western Brisbane team.

Leading 4-8-20 to 0-1-1 at half time, Shamrocks kicked away in the second half to win 12-16-52 to 0-1-1.

The 51-point margin eclipsed the 48-point mark set six years ago against Sarsfields, and was just two points short of the team’s highest-ever score set against John Mitchels in 1998.

That makes it four records in the first three weeks of the season, as the Shamrocks ladies jump to a perfect 3-0 win-loss record.

With six different goal scorers over the weekend – three of whom kicked a hat-trick – Shamrocks’ scoring was led by Renee Moynihan 3-2, Juanita Mottram 3-0, and Narelle Saward 3-0. They were playing without Sally Cooper, who had kicked a record score a week earlier.

Shamrocks face Souths and Harps over the next fortnight for the most difficult matches so far.

In the mens competition over the weekend, Shamrocks B beat Wynnum, while Shamrocks A enjoyed a bye. They play difficult opponents Easts A and Souths respectively at Willawong this Sunday.

Ladies records

Sally kicks oldest record

10 Apr 2005 - Sally Cooper equaled Shamrocks’ oldest individual scoring record as her team remained undefeated after week two of Gaelic Football’s Brisbane Shield at Willawong over the weekend.

Shamrocks ladies 6-13-31 beat Sarsfields 1-0-3, thanks to a five-goal second half.

Sally’s five goals for the game equaled the team single-game record set by team mate Renee Moynihan way back in 1999, also against Sarsfields.

Her 18 points (5-3) total in the match also equaled the mark set by Renee six years ago.

Best for Shamrocks on the weekend were Narelle Seward, Sally Cooper and Seleta McGuire.

Shamrocks ladies now face a tough challenge from John Mitchels on Sunday, while in the mens competition, Shamrocks B play Wynnum, and Shamrocks A have a bye.

Opening records tumble

03 Apr 2005 - Records tumbled as Brisbane’s south-west Shamrocks Gaelic football club opened the Brisbane Shield season with impressive victories at Willawong over the weekend.

The Shamrocks womens team scored its highest-ever season opening total as it beat Easts Celts 7-24-45 to nil. The 24 points is a team single-game record, eclipsing the mark set five years ago against John Mitchels

In the mens competition, Shamrocks A kicked its highest season opening total for a decade, and perhaps highest ever, beating Harps 7-16-37 also to nil. The 16 points was just one short of the long-standing team record kicked against Sarsfields in 1998.

The only blemish on a joyous day was Shamrocks B beaten by John Mitchels 2-2-8 to 2-7-13.

The womens scoring was led by Megan White 2-2, Sally Cooper 1-6 and Roanna Browne 0-5, with best player Sally Cooper.

In the mens, Shamrocks A was led by Paul Daley 2-3, Matt Mayo 2-0 and Brad Kennedy 1-3, best was Brad Kennedy. Justin Mosch and David O’Malley scored a goal apiece for Shamrocks B, and best player was Jordan Lane.

This weekend the Shamrocks A and B teams battle in the much-anticipated western suburbs derby, while Shamrocks women play Sarsfields.

Season starts with a shade of green

21 Mar 2005 - The 2005 Gaelic football year is already tinged with Shamrock green after Brisbane’s south-west club Shamrocks grabbed pre-season success in the lightning premiership at the season-launching sports day at Willawong over the weekend.

Shamrocks won the mens lightning premiership, were runners up in the ladies, and won the Sports Day trophy for the first time in five years.

The World’s first female coach of a mens Gaelic football team, Pullenvale’s Jacqueline Peacock, showed that Shamrocks may be returning to the top of the sport this year as the mens team beat Easts Celts in the weekend final.

Best players for Shamrocks were Australian All-star Brad Kennedy of Holland Park, Yeronga’s Australasian junior best and fairest Cameron Carney, and Irish import Paul Daly from County Armagh.

Shamrocks also qualified for the ladies final, beaten by Sarsfields. Australasian best and fairest Trish Brown was the best player.

Shamrocks won a share of the sports day trophy, tieing with Sarsfields, for the first time since winning the inaugural award in 2000.

The Brisbane south west club has two mens teams and one ladies teams in the Queensland competition that starts next month, and are still recruiting new players.
