Jules Rimet

THE DREAMER FRENCH

Admildo Chirol

In its origin that is remote and indefinite the football takes us to many years before Christ. Chinese, Greek and Romans played with own characteristics, a game that resembled each other to the soccer.

In elapsing of its evolution the soccer won several names: KEMARY - HARPASTUM - SPISKIROS - CALCIUM - SOCCER - FOOTBALL and there is more than a hundred years, in everybody, it provokes hope, sadness, happiness and, mainly, passion.

From its regulation in 1863, that magic game that it can be played in all its fullness by a fat man - Puskas- or for a faulty physical - Garrincha - enchants and provokes the strangest and passionate reactions.

The age is not also important factor to practice it, because a 17 year-old boy (Pelé) that, without never to at least have thought of becoming a prince, all of a sudden, thwarting the natural forces with its art, it is acclaimed as a king.

In my lecture, A WALK FOR THE HISTORY OF THE SOCCER, I travel with my slides the trajectory of that fascinating game, from its origins, going by the evolution of the systems, tactical outlines, demarcation types and mainly analyzing the cups of the world, that are the maximum event of the soccer.

How to speak of Cup of the world, without highlighting the illustration of French Jules. Rimet that was the inspiring of this tournament that, today, does it wake up the attention of trillions of people all over the world?

The dreamer French, as it was known, that idealized the foundation of the FIFA and it was its president from 1929 to 1954 becoming later its honor president, saw his efforts compensated to accomplish the first Cup of the World, after a lot of diplomat fights.

He got the delegates' of 12 countries necessary support in the congress of the FIFA of 1928, in Amsterdam for the accomplishment of the tournament that would be disputed of 4 in 4 years. Thus, the nice " dreamer " monsieur saw its dream to become reality. What impresses me it is that in my lectures verify that a lot of people, for they ignore the historical facts, they think that the name Jules Rimet means only that beautiful statuette.

It is good that everybody knows that, besides its historical importance, for the evolution of the soccer that J.Rimet represents, it was he also the responsible person for the making of the trophy that would take its name.

The indent was made to artisan Abel Lefleur, that in April of 1930 gave to J. Rimet a statuette representing a winged victory, measuring 30cm of height, weighing 4 kilos, being 1.800 grams in massive gold.

The gold was demand of own Rimet that justified:

"I would not like that anyone believed that chose it that precious metal for show up anything. It is only a symbol: The Cup of the World should be the first among the sporting competitions - and the gold is the symbol of the primacy.

The statuette passed for many famous hands until that in 1970 the Brazilian team conquered it definitively, for having won 3 cups of the world.

It was robbed in England and found by a dog. Robbed again in Brazil and melted by thieves.

The FIFA made a response and gave it to the Captain of the Brazilian Team again in solemn session.

If the true not more it exists, the fact is not as important as the historical importance that its name represents, therefore we owed to that name, in the illustration of French Jules Rimet, the true consecration of the soccer.

The Cup of France is close, the cup to be given to the captain of the winner selection will be other, not that idealized by J. Rimet but, allways that we come the winners' gesture, will remember, in its homeland, of that nice one dreamer French that gave its life for the greatness of the soccer.
