Rumba in the Jungle dead or alive?
Hi Jay
With regards to your News Flash article, titled "Sun City Rhythm Challenge" you state that Rumba in the Jungle has died from lack of sponsorship. I now read on "another dance related site" (that's how they refer to DanceInfo SA) that the Rumba In The Jungle is not dead. Here's the article which appeared on that other dance related site:

"A number of articles have appeared in newspapers and on dance related websites in recent weeks, indicating that Rumba in the Jungle will be replaced by the Rama DanceSport North West Rhythm Challenge in the year 2001.

This is not true!

According to Lilian Dooley - founder of Rumba in the Jungle

'Rumba in the Jungle is one of the most popular and prestigious ballroom and latin competitions in South Africa and it will take place in 2001.'"

By the way, I found their site on your dance link page, but I couldn't find yours on theirs.

Graham Todd

Ed
Lilian Dooley also queried that report with me. Here's my reply to her;

"Hi Lilian, I'm not sure, because a dancer being very helpful sent it to me. It apparently appeared in the Pta news, a week or so ago. I'm sure Allan Hammond had something to do with the publication of it. Check it out with him. If you don't come right with Allan, let me know." Todate, Lilian has neither confirmed nor refuted it.

My uneducated guess is that Southern Suns bit off more than they could bite when they sponsored "who wants to be a millionaire", so to heck with the other little guys like DanceSport, because the Jungle is definitely not Rumbaing this year. There is no way one of the most popular and prestigious ballroom and latin competitions in South Africa can be shelved. You just don't shelve popular and prestigious things, you promote and extend them. So I reckon, until I get legit confirmation on that, or I see it calendared for next year, the R in the J is on its way - a gonna for good.

Re the other dance related site that didn't want to mention the name of the other dance related site, it's called, but don't tell anybody, SA DanceSport and they do have DISA as a dance link on theirs, so I'm not sure when it was that you couldn't find it. The beauty of the internet is its free facility to share information, and I only keep dance sites on mine that offer dancers in South Africa usable, updated info. I just hope this other dance related site doesn't peter out like its pompous, predecessor SADance did.

urgent support needed to send SA couple to worlds... HELP !
Hi Jay
Jon and I are organising a dinner/dance to send Sam Malakoene and Petunia Phiri to Slovenia to dance the World Amateur Ballroom Championships on the 9th December 2000.

We need all the support we can get as this young couple are in a very difficult financial position. Please can you advertise this function on your website and help us promote the ticket sales as much as possible.

The dinner will be a three course meal and we will have cabarets in the course of the evening by some of the top ballroom, latin and freestyle dancers in the country.

The details are as follows:
Venue: The Italian Club Johannesburg
            Marais Road
            Bedfordview
Date:    Friday, 24th November 2000
Time:   7:30 for 8:00
Dress:  Strictly black tie
Price:   R300.00 per couple (single tickets also available)
Reservations:  Jon Tudhope  cell 083 489-6250 or home (011) 453-5839.

There is an incentive to all studio heads: any one who sells a minimum of 6 tickets, i.e. 6 couples, will get one ticket free.

We really will appreciate any help you can give with this dance. Jon and I sponsor all of Sam & Petunia's training as well as Petunia's dresses but we are not able to sponsor this sort of trip.

Many thanks and regards

Jon & Cheryl Tudhope

only the good die young
Hi Jay
You must have been wondering why we have been so quiet. I have had a spell in hospital, but only the good die young. Cherie has also had a few spells in hospital. As soon as all is back to normal will be in touch. We are about to donate two more wheelchairs.

Keep well

Kind regards

KEN (Zim)

Ed
We missed you guys from Zim who fight for your rights, the dancer's integrity, do charity work and serve the dance community with unswerving devotion.

As far as the good die young, that puts me in the 180-year-old category because I drink Carling Black Label to keep me out of hospital - you and Cherie should try it, it's a panacea

Have you seen how phenomenally my site has grown?

welcome to shark land
Hi Jay
First time on your website. I note that you have a list of studios in KZN.

I run the "Come Dancing" studio in Pietermaritzburg for Social dancing. I also teach competitive dancers. Can I add my studio and name to your list?

Kind regards,

LYNN  LEA

western cape have supprize for other provinces at the SA
Wazz uup J ??
Rumour has it here in Cape Town that current South African Amatuer Standard Champions Anthony Krotz and Kim Corker are to take the Pro Standard and Latin floor at the upcomming Western Province Champs as well as the SA. A new Professional Standard couple has emerged from Cape Town as well, but this I'll keep a secret until they compete at the SA ( or if you find out by some other means ).

Ccccccc Yaaaaa
Roy !!!

Ed
Roy, I'll tell you wazz uup, the other Provinces are wobbling at the knees, and there is no doubt they'll be going to the gym for the extra pump; taking steroids; seeing their psychos, and they are definitely chewing their fingernails to the bone, some have even progressed down to their toenails. So worry not, the SA competition this year is going to be gynormously tough.

false claim by SA DanceSport to be South Africa's Premier DanceSport site

Good morning Jay
Did you also receive this?

"Hello,
Francois Triegaardt, the owner of the email list ‘SA DanceSport’, is inviting you to join this list at Topica.

Here’s the description of the list:
SA DanceSport is South Africa’s Premier DanceSport web site.
It’s the site that contains the latest most up-to-date information about what’s happening in the Dance Arena in South Africa. You’ll find everything from entry forms for forthcoming competitions, results of pass competitions, information on suppliers of dance products and much, much more.

By joining our email service, we will help keep you, the dancer, informed of the latest postings on SA DanceSport site."

Jay, how can they claim to be South Africa's Premier DanceSport site when your site has ten hundred million much more information of interest to all dancers, AND they have only had a handful of visits whereas your site has almost 16000 recorded?

Elsa Lakic

Ed
No Elsa, they won’t send it to me, because they stole your name off my email list. The one I send out to my thousands of subscribers each week. In the same way they copied all the studio addresses I had in my DanceInfo SA mag, and then, with those addresses they posted their pamphlet announcing the great launch of that abortive glossy magazine SADance to all those studios from my list - the result, a total fiasco, which many dancers still feel was a disgrace and another failure to the sport, and Jay is now beginning to think they are genuine phonies, but I'm sure he has got it all wrong.

Stealing stuff off the net is not my gripe, because I do it all the time to get pertinent dance info to the SA dancer in double-quick time. In fact, long before SADS knew about the net, I had the habit of stealing the URL addresses of those sites that I thought would be of value to dancers in South Africa. I then created a link from mine for their site, so that we mutually benefited dance-wise. I've even put SADS on my "SA link" list and have sent their connection to several dancers. But to claim to be the Premier, when you not, is a schmaltz that dancers don't deserve. Unless Premier means fewest visits and unfinished pages... pages under construction and we are very sorry for the inconvenience.

At least we know that they spelt the website's name wrong when they said "South Africa’s Premier DanceSport web site” The correct spelling is DanceInfo SA and you need to look no further than the visits and letters to DanceInfo SA for evidence of that. As a dancer, you will obviously subscribe to their site, which I endorse, but when you visit them, you will notice that they did not have the courtesy to put South Africa's most popular dance site's link on theirs. Does that tell you something?

I have already received a letter from a dancer saying that he prefers DISA's format of the comp results to SADS's results (you know, the one Caroline sends me) because theirs show no names, only numbers. I not only want names, I want 1st names, it's called a personal affair. What's more, those who don't have the Acrobat file to convert SADS's results and entry forms, are in trouble, and they also need 5 meg of spare space to download Acrobat. Dancers don't want a schlepp, they want info quick and easy, the way we have delivered it since the start.

Elsa, the day they add a letter section to their site, then that's the day I know they mean business, and I'm not talking love-story stuff, I'm talking heart-to-guts stuff. By the way, you don't need to subscribe with them, I have already sent you their link a few times (see my "dance website" page). All you do is open it and bookmark it to your favourites, then every time you want to go to their page, you click on the bookmark and Bob's your Aunty. And if you find anything worth plonking onto my site, give me a whistle.

DISA's aim is not to be Premier, its aim is to talk DANCE, DANCE, DANCE to all the dancers of all forms in South Africa, not only the Ballroom & Latin Competitive section, which is a very small % of the dance community.

My message to the Competitive side is, DISA has built up a very strong following through promptly delivering everything it promises and its main mission is to dispense dance news - COMMUNICATION IS THE WISE NAME OF THE GAME and I care two hoots about Premier or whose site is Premier as long as we all serve the dancer well.

Cape dancers on the BURN for SA's
Hi  J
It's me, Roy from Cape Town. I just thought I'll let you in on the practice sessions here in CT. Almost all our  championship dancers in the Western Cape have pushed there lessons up to 6 days a week (some 7 days, like our top Amateur Latin and Ballroom couples). It's all in preparation for the South African Champs. I myself have been practising 5 days a week, being a Championship Standard dancer and all. Also remember that these practices are no less than 5 to 8 hours a day. So I guess that the SA is going to be on the BURN !!!

Hope to hear from you soon.

Cccc Yaaaa
Roy !!!!

OH, did you see Grant and Viveca's photo on the Dancesport UK website ??

Ed
Here's Grant & Viveca's photo for those who would like a gawk, and it's photo #1 on the UK gallery page, check it out.

No wonder the weather here in Gauteng is terribly turbulent, it's all the furious hours of practise you guys are doing in the Western Cape that's causing it... 5 to 7 hours a day, 8 days a week... I'm sweating, and the rest of those dancing in the SA's who live north of the Cape are petrified out of their patents. And they need to be, because all the fierce competition comes from the Cape. Don't Cape competitors (Latin & Ballroom) always win everything each year? So they tell me, but the Cape keep it quiet - nobody sends news... is that modesty or stupidity?

For instance Roy, by you writing about Grant & Viveca in this letter and your previous one, you have done the sport proud. You have pointed out another SA dance achievement. That's the kind of stuff I really want dancers to read, and the kind of stuff we need officials to publicise frequently in their effort to promote dancing. An achievement of any kind is the direct result of the amount of sweat that went into it, and it's the sweat that we must acknowledge and honour - thanks for your contribution towards that endeavour, your concern is greatly appreciated... and don't stop now, we need news from the Cape, the Cape is a cool place with groovy dancers.

GOOD LUCK for the SA's.

Hi Jay
Found this Arts Link site today. Thought you might be able to get linked to it so that more people can be exposed to your site.

Cheers
Wez Mayo

Ed
Thanks Wez, will do, and it's also a neat search site for dancers interested in the many other artistic forms of dance.

need teachers - Ellie and Greg
Hi Jay
We like your new lay out. Keep it up, you are still way ahead.

We are looking for Dance Studios overseas or in SA. that need teachers?

Cheers

Ellie and Greg

Ed
Here’s Martin Smith’s email Address: dancewiz70@hotmail.com He went from Durban to the States, maybe he can help. Tell him I gave you his address and why the heck does he not write to us in SA.

As for the studios in South Africa who need teachers, no problem, there must be millions who will happily oblige.

Turbo Travel for Dancers
Jay
You really are a pro!  Do you attend any comps?  I look forward to meeting you.

Anyway, should you need any travel arrangements, please contact Turbo Travel on (011) 880-6030/1.  As a matter of fact, Roy Bennett has been doing Travel Bookings through us for Adjudicators, and many individual dancers have also
done bookings through us recently, even from Pretoria!

Perhaps there are some dancers looking for a good Travel Agent?

Have a great day!

JANINE

Ed
Dancers travel all the time, so I'm sure a good Travel Agent will suit them nicely. Brian Schmidt (Chairman of the RDTA  - Republican Dance Teachers' Association) once announced that registered dancers were entitled to a 50% discount on all internal and external flights. Was Turbo Travel involved in that scheme and does it still hold?

JANINE
Turbo Travel was not involved in the scheme where registered dancers were entitled to a 50% discount, and I'm not sure if that still applies.

Turbo Travel is a small Agency who provide a personalised service.  We can offer good rates because of our association with Sure Travel, the largest Travel network in South Africa.

Matthew & Nicole Cutler's profile on its way to the RSA
Dear Jay
Sorry it's been so long!!!! I know I promised to get back to you about our profile but, we have been extremely busy since turning professional and have hardly been at home in the UK for longer than a few days at a time since Blackpool!  We will get down to answering all the questions you asked as soon as the International is over! Hope you can be patient just a little while longer!  Thanks!

With regards

Matthew & Nicole Cutler

Ed
No rush, first things first... WIN the International, we're rooting for you. I'm glad you wrote, because a number of SA dancers have asked me about your profile. Now they'll know why the wait.

Ryno van den Berg, who is also from South Africa (in the UK at present), will be competing in the same International championships as you. I've asked him to contact you re your profile. It might save time, because he was my reporter in the days when we still had our SA dancer's magazine. Give him my regards.

Nicole, thanks again, and GOOD LUCK to you and Matthew for the championships.

the accent is without doubt on reverse discrimination
Hi Jay
While watching the episode covering DanceSport talk on TV1's "two way" programme Monday 2nd October 2000, I couldn't help but think, or at least, I was left with the idea that the promotion of dancing in South Africa is a "one way" street on a two-way programme. The accent, without a shadow of doubt, is placed on reverse discrimination. Not one white couple in sight. Do whites still dance competitively? because I haven't seen a Caucasian couple on TV for ages, or are they all vanishing because of our rainbow nation's affirmative judging system?

Jay, I'm not begrudging the black people by any means, they're doing great, as the one teacher said, "we used to practise ballroom on a soccer field" but my question is, why are the whites disappearing? There are many talented white dancers in our country, now you can count them on your one hand which only has one finger, and the colours in our rainbow scheme are distinctly lopsided.

Another thing, I wish our politicians would stop harping on the "old regime", the "apartheid era" and do their damnedest to get on with the new, the future. It's time to forget about using the past as an excuse for all the failures of the present. Let's bury the past in our history books and think ahead with positive vision, the gates are wide open now.

One thing for sure, our dancesport officials have taken the steroids you suggested at the beginning of this year.

Jay, it's good to know that there is at least one dance site where dancers can air their views.

Jonathan

A concerned white dancer

Ed
A number of our pupils who saw this show said the exact same thing (in a tone of vanquished despair). It's as though whites, for some weird reason, are being ousted from the sport. But I saw the Caucasian couple you counted on your one-fingered hand (Martin Moroder & Hayley Bennet). I must say, I am very impressed with the standard of dancing of our black couples, they have tremendous flair and panache, in both Ballroom and Latin.

If we must talk turkey, I mean the very cold stuff, whites are not the future of this country, they are the past. The truth is, the officials and the sponsors are only interested in the future, so Jonathan learn to live with that - we are the forgotten race who have HAD our days.

One important thing my steroids' story proved, is that it pays to say your say, regardless of what others think, and normally, the others, that's all they do IS THINK.

I'm just so tired of listening to DanceSport's lame duck, poverty-stricken dilemma. Dancer are continually on the beg; grovelling like plackard-street-holders to get sponsorship or financial help. They slog and slave their hearts out for themselves and their country. For themselves, 3/4's of what they earn goes into their dancing. From their country and the bodies that be, they yield sweet fanny annie. Even the "SA DanceSport" magazine that was so arrogantly announced, has disgracefully folded, collapsed at the knees, thanks to the lack of funds - poverty in the camp, that's our trademark... who said ballroom dancing is a glamorous, artistic sport?

I've got a another stupid idea for the sport... no! you really don't want to know... a DanceSport lotto scheme.

bargain buys - dresses
Hi there
My mom has four very elegant evening dresses that she would like to sell. They have all only been worn once and they are very beautiful.  She does not have pictures of them but they are all clean and just laying there in her cupbaord.

I wrote to you to ask if we may advertise them on your site?

If you would like to contact my mom for more infomation please do not hesitate. Elaine Maritz 011 472-8231 or myself 082 583 1250

Sincerely

Heidi Maritz

Ed
I also put your ad on the page for "Bargain Buys" check it out. A good thing to do is announce what price you want for the dresses.

dancesport doesn't care
Hi there
Dave and Theresa Fourie are representing South Africa in Belgium on the 14th of October, Senior Latin, why are they not mentioned on the internet so that everybody can read about our Springbok Senior Couple, or is it lack of interest?.

From

Salome Sechele and all their loyal supporters

Ed
Thanks for letting us know, and on behalf of the thousands of dancers who visit DISA, I wish Dave and Theresa Fourie all the best of luck in Belgium. I've put this important news on my homepage and in the News Flash section.

Salome Sechele and all their loyal supporters, it's not lack of interest, IT'S FEAR. My problem is, DanceSport avoids this site, in the same way they dreaded my dancer's magazine which was so popular, and the reason they shy-away from DISA is that I allow dancers to speak their minds. Dancers haven't been doing that lately, but DanceSport knows I won't hold back any reasonable argument. All I'm trying to do is HELP the sport, even if it means keeping it clean.

What I can't get DS to understand is that by announcing important news such as "we wish our Springboks Dave and Theresa Fourie all the best in the Belgium Championships on the 14 Oct", gives the sport a BOOST, it is a PROMOTION, no matter whose vehicle we use, and I mean, this site has much more traffic than any other Dance site in South Africa... so what's the problemo...? I'm sure it's not pettiness.

When Dave and Theresa return, tell them to give us a review of their experiences in Belgium.

19th placing at World Latin Champs not mentioned
Hi  J
My name is Roy Pieterse and I'm from Cape Town. I just wanted to ask if you didn't put any notices up about Grant Mandon and Viveca about there 19th placing at the recent Amateur World Latin Champs.

Ccccc Yaaaaa

No I didn't, but now, thanks to helpful Roy of CT. it's on - gracios moocho

top SA latin dancers, ryno & sonja tan in london
Hi Jay
Just to let u know, I am very happy with my ad. It really looks lovely.

Sonja and I are in London at the moment for a few lessons & competitions (including the big international champs)

Let me know if u want anything for exchange for some sunshine.

ryno

Ed
That's the leisured life of a seasoned competitor... to London and back all year round, dancing, competing and rubbing shoulders and trading minds with the best in the world of Ballroom - the envy of every SA dancer.

Now that you mentioned it, there are a few things you can exchange for some SA sunshine:

  1. a review of that big championships you and Sonja will be winning. Tell us what the latest DanceSport fashions in dress are. Give us all the saucy, sizzling sandals from abroad. Let us know who's HOT and who's NOT. Fill us in on the Latin and Ballroom techniques & standards in vogue; what the top trainers expect & demand. Make a list of all the wild & wicked current CD numbers burning up the Ballroom & Latin charts in London, and don't forget to list the Ballroom buzzwords being used and a few glossy continental magazines for Jay to peruse.
  2. a chat with Michael & Beata for my webpage "the GREATS of SA dancing", and
  3. world latin champion of South Africa Nicole Cutler promised to give me an in-depth interview for my website and the SA dancer. If you can track her down, this is basically what I'd like to know from her:
I'm not to keen on the 3rd-degree type interview. I prefer a profile of how and when she started; who trained her; how she met her hubby & partner Matthew; their relationship as a dance couple; some advice to aspiring couples; how they go about preparing and psyching themselves for major comps; who they admired and emulated; who were the dancers who encouraged her in SA; what are the basic obstacles and tribulations encountered when striving to be the best and how she overcame them; what her champion dance partner Matthew feels and thinks; her thoughts on dance fashion, attire, hairdos, shoes, etc..

Thanks Ryno, you see, there is a lot of sunshine here in our land at present, and oh yes, don't forget to practise your dancing for six hours a day while you're about it.

Ryno responds
That sounds like 2 weeks of heavy home work. Well, I'll see if I can fit my own dancing in, but don't worry, I will make it a priority to get the details for u.

It is f%$6in$£!!!?@#~ cold here, and the rain doesn't stop. Got some sun this morning for about 2 min.

So far we have had 5 lessons, 5 practices and 4 competitions in 7 days... too much for the spasms I have in my shoulders right now.

Tell u what, the moment I arrive on Wednesday morning, I will put my story together and e-mail it to u. Hope it's OK.

I am staying with 15 South Africans in a house at the moment, and we are having a BRAAI. Sonja went to Brussels to support her couple Dave and Theresa Fourie in the worlds for Seniors. Busy life hey??

I think I am going to do some deliveries for my ex boss tomorrow. remember the postman job????

Go well, see u soon

ryno

"sunshine" london

Ed
Ryno, busy life... that's dancing. They say, if you want something well done, give it to the busiest person in town. Don't give it to the guy who has all the time in the world. That's why he has all the time in the world, HE DOES NOTHING - the vacillator, the non-achiever, so the whole world here in sunny South Africa relies on you heavily - NO EXCUSES.

Nocole Cutler (3 letters ahead of yours) said that after the International Championships (which the two of you will be competing in AGAINST EACH OTHER), she would probably have more time to give her profile.

You say, "5 lessons, 5 practices and 4 competitions in 7 days" but how did you feature... South Africa wants to know!

Thanks for your help and influence, and WIN. Remember, it you think BIG you get big or a little less than big. If you think small you get small or nothing at all - GOOD LUCK to you and Sonja from all of us in sunshine land.

line dance teachers in south africa... HELP!
Hi Jay
Trying to get details of all Known Line Dance Teachers in RSA. Can you Help?

To give you some background about myself. My name is Robert Boom and am the current chairperson of the 'American Line Dancing Association of South Africa' (ALDASA).  I have also included a couple of pages from a website that we are currently developing and as such the pictures and logo etc. may not display.

I would imagine that these will answer a number of your questions about who we are and what we are trying to achieve. Please do not hesitate to come back with any other questions that you might have.

Now to ask some questions about you . Are you a line dancer yourself? How are you connected Danceinfo South Africa? How does one go about getting ourselves listed? What fees are involved?

Some other questions. Do you have email addresses for some of the other teachers listed like DanceWell Social Studio and Lyn Biberauer? Are there others that I did not spot? I noticed that the reference to someone in the Cape gave no details, not even a phone number.

That's enough for now, better keep something back for our next correspondence.

Robert

Ed
I couldn't access the link you emailed, but from what I salvaged, I created a page for you, and added it to my site as a sample. Here's the link American Line Dance Association of South Africa  Your page can also be opened from my homepage's "list of studios & clubs" in the Western Cape.

To subscriber for a page on DISA it costs R50 a year. I design your page (roughly) to your specifications and you change it to the way you eventually want it. In your case where you have your own website, you would use your page on my site as an "access point" to your own site for all my subscribers.

The secret of encouraging visits is to supply dancers with regular updates, which I do. I update my site every day and send these updates to thousands of dance once a week. My subscribers who send me info frequently for their page, get the best coverage, because I direct dancers to their page through my updates.

The email address I gave you for the Line Dance contact is Zani (visit her page) a DISA subscriber who is doing very well in the Pretoria area. The Line Dance schools in Pretoria use the video "Christy Lane's Complete Guide to Line Dancing" which has 22 exciting routines.

I am the messenger of the dancer. My site will eventually help SA dancers find info on many forms of dance quickly and easily, and a page like yours will be a great assist in promoting Line Dancing in our country. Even just reading a letter like this could make dancers more aware of Boot Scootin' Boogie and buckles.

Whatever info I receive re Line Dancing, I'll send your way.

Should you decide to subscribe, you pay the R50 into my account and email to confirm.
My details are:
Bank: First National Bank
J.J. Helm
Branch: Sunnyside, Number 25-06-45
Account Number 510 6100 7775

Thanks for your interest, and I know that Line Dancing can become a tremendous hit in South Africa.

tanz... the coolest lunchtime venue in town?!
