As you can see - Newcastle at home shot straight to the top of the list. Here's what the Daily Telegraph said about it ...
"Breathtaking, simply breathtaking. The Kop will be hoarse this morning, having provided the deafening backdrop to an electrifying encounter... Liverpool poured forward in relentless red waves towards the beseeching Kop, whose support was rewarded with four goals in 18 bewitching minutes. ... Running on pure adrenalin, Liverpool responded to Heggem's example. And how The Kop loved it. "Sexy football, sexy football" they kept chanting, varying their verse to a string of "olés" when the ball was travelling, as if mesmerised, between Redknapp, Heggem and Owen." (Henry Winter, Dec 29th) |
ManU away in the cup was another epic and Herculean effort from the 9,000 travellers, however I would suggest that the nerves that plagued the Liverpudlians during the last 20 minutes may have affected the 'performance'. At times, though, the support was phenomenal - easily drowning out the 46,000 Mancs. See the report on the < RAOTL News > page, or check out issue 30 of the fanzine for numerous correspondents' verdicts.
The Valencia away trip was the best overall sing-song in a long while and so features prominently in the above 'Kop Chart'. The Season's best games for support - to date - table currently stands at (as of Feb 8th 1999) -
Newcastle (h) | It was like 1976 all over again. |
Newcastle (a) | Simply tremendous tribute to Kenny |
Valencia (a) | See trip report |
Man U (a) ~ Cup | Now you know why they only let less than 2000 away fans in normally. |
Leeds (a) | Grit from the team and the fans respond. Solidarity with Robbie. |
Celta Vigo (h) | No Surrender! And a standing Kop. |
Man Utd (a) ~ League | Our 'derby' game these days. |
Everton (h) | Let's hope Paddy's strike sends the pitch-invaders down. |
Aston Villa (a) | Fowler! And tons of stick for 'Mad Stan' (well, he's asked for it) |
Boro (a) | Eggy Veggy Heggy!!!! Jingle Bells and all that. |
West Ham (a) | Second half rally and most of us well manolo'd |
Next Flag day is Man Utd (h) May 5th
May 5th - Man Utd (h) - then the last home game of the season (Wimbledon) - the WE WON THE TREBLE IN ROME : 15th Anniversary FlagDay. The 1983-84 season was one that we'll be hard pushed to emulate. We won the European Cup for the 4th time in 7 seasons. We won out 4th consecutive League Cup and a third consecutive League Championship. We also reached the FA Cup semi-finals and Ian Rush scored 50 (Yes - FIFTY goals). So let's celebrate Joe Fagan's Roman heroes and the glorious "Treble won in Rome". Of course should you want to practice celebrating our glorious European Cup heritage at the Utd game ten days earlier, then please do so. That game will be live on SKY and should provide us with a good opportunity to show the rest of the football world that at least we are good - if not, the best - at something up here at Anfield. Remember - We are the famous Kopites.
Last Flag Day was December 19th - Sheffield Wed. (h). Respect the 96 Flagday.

Bill Shankly 40th anniversary FlagDay - December 1999
December 1999 sees the 40th anniversary of Bill Shankly's arrival at Anfield. At a home game as near as possible to December 14th - the day Bill officially took over - we will be organising a celebration of Bill's Anfield achievements. At the moment details are sketchy, but we hope to have a weekend's schedule of events and we hope to include a match between a local schoolboy side and a team from Glenbuck/Muirkirk. Inside Anfield prior to the home game we hope to honour Bill from The Spion Kop with a FlagDay/Mosaic/ 'Banderione' (for all you Ultras out there) .
