HILLSBOROUGH BOYCOTT TO GO AHEAD. At the weekly meeting of the HJC held tonight it was unanimously agreed to continue with the proposed boycott of the Hillsborough game to be held on 8th May this year. The Liverpool Echo reported that there would be an end to calls for the boycott following today's announcement regarding the proposed memorial to Hillsborough victims in Sheffield. The Echo quoted the chairperson of the Hillsborough Family Support Group as saying that a boycott would "... serve no purpose. It would be futile." The HJC and not the HFSG initiated the boycott campaign. Therefore, the HFSG is not in a position to state that the boycott has been called off. Members of our group voiced their concern over Mr Hicks' comments and also the Liverpool Echo's comments, which clearly misinformed their readership. The group is of the opinion that the decision to erect a memorial a distance from the ground is an insult and is intended as a 'buying off exercise' as there are clearly financial implications of the boycott. The HJC wishes it to be known that they will not be bought off in such a way. The boycott is intended as a means of giving Liverpool supporters a practical method of demonstrating their disgust at the way they have been treated by Sheff Wed. The bereaved families who are members of the HJC wish it to be made known that, contrary to the report in the Echo, they have NOT been consulted regarding the memorial; and have therefore not agreed to the names of the deceased being omitted from the memorial. WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT THE BOYCOTT WILL GO AHEAD AND WILL BE A SUCCESS. THE DEAD OF HILLSBOROUGH WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. |
