Notts Forest 2 Liverpool 1 - FA Youth Cup (City Ground, Nottingham) | ||
Sorry - can't think of a witty headline for this one. (JM) JJP reports.

We bowed out of the FA Youth Cup losing 2-1 at the City Ground
against Nottingham Forest. Forest had already beaten Man United Youths in the previous
round so we anticipated that it would be a tough game. Some of our hardy souls and
intrepid reporters turned up to watch and from the banks of the River Trent . This was the
findings of the Messages Boards legendary 'Five Bellies' and the rest. We started very poorly, gave away two silly goals and couldn't take any of our many chances later on in the game. Forest team was a strong one with at least two of their side having played or been part of their league team this season. Our right back Cavanagh impressed me, as did centre half Paul Culshaw, midfielder Michael Foley and left midfield Stephen Warnock. Brian McIlroy and Torpey that came on as subs looked good as well. John Miles is probably not good enough on last night's performance and Ian Armstrong(well as he performed) is no Michael Owen so might not make the grade either. Peter Crookes who played in goals would probably warrant a place in the RAOTL forum select XI in the absence of any other takers! He might have been at fault for the first goal (totally exposed for the second) but held everything he came out to catch in the air and the Forest lads were bigger as well! Remember the name of David Prutton, he's already a first team regular and could be the next big money departure from the City Ground! In the first half Forest had more opportunities to add to their lead and really we were somewhat fortunate to turn round just two down. After the interval we did show more purpose and missed one excellent opportunity to reduce the deficit when one of our lads [can't remember who] rounded the keeper but delayed his shot and the chance went begging (It was John Miles - so says Chris Bascombe in The Echo). Our goal came in time added on but it was an absolute cracker from Chris Thompson. But it was really too little too late. Forest deserved to win and look to have some promising youngsters. Liverpool: Crookes, Cavanagh, Olsen, Otsemobor, Culshaw, Foley (Sub: McIlroy 82), Thompson, O'Brien (Sub: Torpey 52), Warnock (Sub:Park 84), Armstrong, Miles. Subs not used: Parry, Porter.
