Is Ryno a Hall of Famer or Just Plain Over-Rated????
Let's discuss what you think of Sandberg's legacy!
A couple of weeks ago in the Chicago Tribune one of the sports editors wrote an article claiming that Sandberg is extremely over-rated. The next week another editor wrote a column explaining why Ryno is indeed a worthy Hall of Famer and the best second baseman ever.
Here's What Other Miserable Cubs Fans Had to Say ...
Are you kidding? There are only two other players in the history of major league baseball who have as many hits, home runs, RBI's, and stolen bases as Ryno. (Andre Dawson and Willie Mays are the others). Add to that a solid batting average and the highest career fielding percentage for a second baseman, and you have one of the greatest all around players to ever take the field. People are distracted by the fact that he never played in a World series and that he has struggled late in his career. But those are ridiculous reasons to keep him out. If that were the criteria, half the guys in the hall of fame wouldn't be there. 8/11/97
sandberg played his position better than almost any human could have possibly done. especially if you consider sandberg's natural talents. the man never really has had the best hands in the world: they were always very stiff. he overcame that problem with an amazing reaction time and practice, practice, practice. i've always believed that you should judge a player's greatness not by the skills he brings to the game, but rather how he adapts as the competition finds weaknesses and starts to exploit them. well, sandberg got much better as his career clicked along. he found a way to get much more power out of his bat than anyone would have ever guessed. if he hit his prime in the mid-90s like Brady Anderson, he might put up 55 homers in a year. the real reason why sandberg might not make the hall of fame (and it is legitimate, no matter what the press says) is that he was never a great quote guy. he was a very boring interview. that aside, sandberg deserves to be in the hall and may very well be one of the top three second basemen to every hold down the keystone sack. but, then again, second base is one of the least representated positions in the HOF, with only 15 second sackers listed. expect sandberg to be 16. 11/3/97

Is Sammy Worth All That Cash????
Let's discuss what you think of Sammy's 4-year $42.5 million deal!
Is he really the corner stone of the Cubs?
I think that Sammy is worth that sort of cash based on his stats, but for Andy MacPhail to say that the Cubs are building the team around him is absurd! I would have a hard time admitting that Sammy carries the Cubs. Do you know who leads the Cubs in RBIs with runners in scoring position? No, not Sammy, but Ryne Sandberg! Sammy never shortens his swing just to make contact with runners on -- he is always swinging for the fences.
Here's What Other Miserable Cubs Fans Had to Say ...
I have been a Cubs fan for longer than I care to remember. every time they sign a player to build a team around that player either does not work out... Goose Gossage Geoge Bell......or they end up hurt more than they play.... Andre Dawson...Bruce Sutter....Maybe they should sick to signing a bunch of no names and has beens like they did in 1984. They didn't do too bad that year. 7/23/97
The Cubs (or any team for that manner) don't get players like Sammy that often... Pay him and you'll get the protection behind him when Orie matures in a year or two. 7/24/97
Sammy's worth having around, but nowhere near what the Cubs paid. He's too streaky, hitting a bonanza of extra-base hits, then collecting a bonanza of K's. He might not look so bad, though, if there were people getting on base in front of him consistently. Sammy's woes wouldn't be so noticeable if there was run production at other places in the lineup, but there just isn't. All the money the Cubs spent on Sammy should have been spent on players to get on base and a modicum of pitching. 7/24/97
$40,000,000 X .253 = ripoff 7/31/97
Hey dont be so hard on Sammy. As soon as the Cubbies get someone to bat behind him, you will see a big turn-around in Sammy`s numbers. Right now though there is no one back there who can consistently put the ball in play or over the wall so Sammy doesnt get squat to swing at. Sammy only wants to perform and obviously opposing pitchers will not challenge him when they can pitch him outside knowing that if he walks the next batter isnt gonna hurt`em, thus Swinging Sam goes after the bad pitch and Ks. 8/8/97
Sammy is the most exciting cub to play since Andre Dawson. He can run, throw, and hit for power. However, Sammy is the most overpaid player in all of baseball. Playing in Wrigley field, where even Jeff Blauser hit 3 homeruns in one game, the idea is not to swing for the fences. If a player wants to hit homeruns at Wrigley, they merely need to make good contact. Unfortunately for the Cubs, Sammy thinks he has to hit the ball to Skokie with every swing. Thus, that is where the 190 plus strikeouts come into play. Striking out does not win games at Wrigley, getting on base does!! 1/30/98
sammy sosa is one of the best latino players in the league...he is also the most underrated...like alot of latin america baseball players...he does alot for the community as well as give great contributions to the game its self...i dont know why people are so hard on him...get off his back has done more then alot of the rest of the cubs...in fact the cubs suck its just sammy holding up the team...go sammy smack #60!!!! 7/29/98
