| First Grading Period Focus The focus of the first grading period is how to think like a scientist. This means learning and applying the scientific process of question, research, hypothesize, experiment, analyze, conclude, and report. We will also learn science rules and regulations that help keep everyone in the science environment safe. In addition, we will focus on planning and implementing experiments, determining dependent and independent variables, applying controls, and finding constants. We will also apply statistical calculations to collected data to find means, and, if applicable, medians and modes. We will graph and interpret data. We will also determine, if applicable, the percent error for data and/or percent deviation for our data as compared to expected results. We will also gain knowledge of how things fit together as we study matter, chemical and physical properties, chemical and physical changes, atom, molecules, and elements. In order to accomphish these goals, we will have various assignments, including hands-on laboratory experiments and activities, written reports, and projects that demonstrate our ability to formulate a hypothesis, research and plan an experiment, implement and interpret the results of the experiment, draw conclusions about the experiment, and describe possible future hypotheses and experiments based on our findings. We will have a literature rich science environment, demonstrated by our ability to create our own stories about related concepts, find science concepts in a work of fiction, compose a report about a relevant issue in today's world, and read and interpret current science events and findings. Home learning assignments will measure our ability to read and interpret science concepts, as will exams and quizzes on the read material. Technology will be addressed as we learn to research and report using computer based learning, as well as using technology for the gathering of scientific data via computer and calculators. |
