Literally speaking, Karma means nothing more than action. We normally extend this meaning to a chain of causation that sends and receives consequences according to that action. The act itself may be a part of that chain of causation. It seems that every cause has a consequence, and every effect has its cause. This is why many who employ Magic feel that luck or chance are only names for this principle that no one has yet recognized. So, how does this apply to us, as the Magus asks the Sorceress. The Magus sees this Karma, and acts to change it, if he can.
The Magus can change the Wave fronts of Karma by employing the Principle of Conservation. This principle shows that we may change any energy. Converted, reformed, or changed, we can never destroy energy, however. If we find we are unable to change the chain of causation, we can hope for Entropy to take a hand and balance and redistribute that energy.
Karma is both an active and passive teacher. Active, Karma may pay us a call to help us evolve. On the physical level, He presents a system of cause and consequence, teaching the soul how to navigate in the real world. A species or individual will either learn and adapt, or die. On the mental level there are similar conditions in both the evolution of a species and of the individual. Karma may present us with what Eric Erickson called the Psycho-social Crisis, or what I call Existential Crisis. These are specific lessons that we learn as we mature and face challenges to our existence.
