Champollion and the Stone of Rosetta
Learning to read the Egyptian Hieroglyphs started with this stone and this man:
Stone of Rosetta, British Museum,London Jean Francois Champollion
Here is an extract from the writing on the Rosetta Stone
A French soldier from Napoleons Army has found the 'Stone of Rosetta' in the year 1799
near the Nile. The stone was carved with an inscription in three
different scripts: hieroglyphs, demotic and Greek.
The adventure of egyptology began... but at this time Jean-Francois was only 9 years old.
And the mystery remained still some years unresolved.
Knowing Greek and Demotian, Champollion 9 yrs later was able to start the translation
of the inscriptions in 1808 at age 18. The young man now was
a very talented historian as well as an inspired and unrivaloled
philologist and could speak Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Arabic, Chaldean and Syrian.
By 19,Champollion was a History lecturer at Grenoble University.
After 14 years of study, he finally deciphered the hieroglyphs.
The results of his great achievement were announced in 1822.
Finally after nearly 1500 years of silence, ancient Egyptian writing could be read!
