What You Remember Best

Think about your favorite story for a moment. What do you remember best? Do you remember the words written on the page? Or what the characters looked like and did?

If you are like most people you probably remember scenes, especially those with lots of action, intense feelings, or maybe both. Do you remember any favorite lines? Some people can remember long sections of dialog from a movie, yet could never memorize an entire poem.

What's the difference?

If you've already looked at About Your Brain, you may have figured it out. Which reason do you think is the answer?

  1. It's easier to remember something that you enjoy.

  2. Images make a more lasting impression than language alone.

  3. Using both sides of your brain to process information involves more brain cells so it's easier to "find" it later.

  4. All of the above.

If you picked number four, you're absolutely right!
