HAT FORMS
Supplies:
cheap sunday/easter type hat, one large sheet of poster board, 1 yard of material to cover the hat with (white cotton type) and then the final material to cover the hat with - usually 1 yard- fabric glue (aleenes is good), and trimmings.
1. cut the brim off of the hat, leaving only the crown.
2. place the cap of the hat on the poster board and trace the size of it - this is the hole that fits on their head. referred to as the crown trace.
3. depending on how tall you want the new brim, trace a parallel circle around the crown...probably 8" between the crown trace to the top of the brim trace.
4. start at the outside and cut a straight line thru the brim to the crown
5. cut out the circle that is the crown trace, and cut around the outer edge creating the brim. If you fold it up tight it will look like a funnel- you will make this funnel and then open it to fit the crown closer to the end.
6. To secure it, staple the brim to the crown and also staple the top and bottom of the brim where the two ends meet. Hot glue the ends of the brim together, do not put too much glue or it will be bumpy.
7. Cover with cotton type material- this is to add padding, and also cover any markings on the poster board. Then cover with finishing material-- to stablinze the hat, cover the brim and the crown with one piece of material on the top and bottom sides. Glue the material onto the hat.
Supplies:
cheap sunday/easter type hat, poster board and material to cover
1. cut a 1/2 moon out of the poster board size depending on how tall you want it to stick out of the side of the hat. 6" is good
2. cut a slit the length of the posterboard slit in the crown of the hat
3. Cover slit with first material, then with finishing material before you place it in the slit of the crown. A contrasting color would look good here.
4. cover the hat with first material and then finishing material, folding the edges in the slit so they dont show.
5. place the slit in the slit in the crown and fold edge to be flush inside the crown and glue it down. This secures the 1/2 moon shape onto the hat.
