Orca
Killer Whale

The Killer whale is the largest member of the dolphin family. Distinctive jet-black, brilliant white , the huge dorsal finned male makes this animal easy to identify.

Despite its name, the Killer whale has never hurt a person in the wild. Aggression within the pod is very rare. The pod is a close-knit family group and usually stay together for life. They create their own dialects. If other pods do join together it is called a “Superpod” and there can be up to 150 whales together.

Killer whales live in cooler waters, especially Polar Regions, than tropical and subtropical regions.

Their diet consists of salmon, cod, and squid. It's consumption of birds, penguins, sea turtles, seals, and porpoise depends upon availability.

The conflict between man and Killer whale is food, this has led to Killer whale deaths in the Icelandic and Norwegian herring fisheries.

The worldwide population of killer whales is unknown, the Orca is not on the endangered list, although his habitat is being threatened. His food source will run out and there will be no more of the most “Social and Intelligent Mammal” in the aquatic life circle.
