CENTERS

Centers are an important part of a second graders day! We have two types of centers: literacy stations and learning centers. In second grade, literacy stations and learning centers are combined during the one hour center time each morning. The centers are organized and changed every two weeks. Here is a listing of some of the centers students will be exposed to:

LITERACY STATIONS:

Literacy stations concentrate on reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

Reading Center: This center contains books at all different levels that students can choose to read from. We have a reading corner set up in the room where students can sit comfortably and read. Students will also be doing a reading activity based on a book or theme.
Writing Center: The writing center contains a post office, slates, journals, and many materials for students to use to practice their writing. Students will do a writing activity based on the book or theme.
Listening Center: At this center, students can listen to a tape while they are following along with the book. Also, students can record their own stories on blank audiotapes. The books and stories recorded in this center will go along with the book and theme being studied.
Poem Center: At the poem center, we cut up the "poem of the week" into words and mix up the words. Students need to put the poem back in the correct order on the pocket chart. Students will get their own copy of the poem for their poetry notebooks. They will be illustrating and highlighting the poem for the book or theme. Sometimes there may be an activity to go along with the "poem of the week".
Computer Center: At this center, students play reading games on the computers such as Curious George ABC, Kids Works Deluxe, etc.Students will also be writing and reading on the computer about topics that go along with the theme or book.
Spelling: Students at this center will practice their spelling words for the week. They will do an activity that goes along with these words.
Guided Reading Center: At this center, students sit with the teacher and read a book while focusing on specific phonics and reading skills.
Word Center: At this center, students can mold clay into letters and words, make stories using a magnetic board, make words and sentences using word blocks or magnetic letters, etc. Students will be focusing on a specific phonics skill each week that goes along with the book or theme and doing an activity to increase their knowledge of that particular skill.

LEARNING CENTERS:

Learning centers forcus on a particular subject, but also incorporate literacy. The following are a list of learning centers done in our second grade classroom:

Math Center: At this center, students can choose from a wide range of math manipulatives that they are able to count, tell time, make patterns, or sort. There will be a math activity that will go along with our book, theme, or math unit being studied.

Students will do a science activity that goes along with our theme, book, or unit we have been studying in science.
