Room Six

Hikutaia Primary School

New Zealand

Room Six did lots of interesting things for the Rocky Shore study.

We spent the day at Pauanui Beach and found lots of interesting creatures in the rock pools at low tide. We went for a swim and had a picnic lunch.

Hiwi did this observational drawing of a dead crab we found.

Dioramas

We each made a diorama showing the creatures that live in the rock pools.

We painted boxes blue or green and then made crayon pictures to cut out. We hung our

creatures from the roof of the box or glued them to the sides.

Our Marine Tank

We set up a Marine Tank in our classroom. There were shells on the bottom and rocks for creatures to hide under. We kept two starfish in our marine tank. We fed our starfish on Black Neritas. We had to break the Nerita shells with a hammer so the starfish could get to eat them. The Neritas lived in the tank until we needed them for the starfish to eat. When we dropped the broken Neritas in the tank the starfish quickly moved over to them and extruded their stomachs to feed. There was a hermit crab and a rock crab in the tank. Our chiton died. Everything else lived for five weeks until Mrs Crawford took them back to the sea.

We wrote about the creatures we found at the rock pools.

Starfish

Starfish push their tummy over the Nerita when they want to eat. Starfish are very strong. If they want to eat a pipi they squeeze and pull until the pipi is tired and it lets go and the starfish can eat it. Starfish are different colours and they have tubes in their legs that help them move.

Starfish can have five legs. Starfish have suckers. If they loose a leg they grow a new one. They walk pretty fast.

Starfish

Starfish have five legs and they have suckers on the side of them because they are meant to. They eat shell fish. If they loose a leg they grow a new one. They have no brain.

About Our Batik.

Everyone in Room Six made a batik wall hanging. First we sketched our picture on calico with a white chalk. We heated some wax and very carefully brushed hot wax on the lines we had drawn. We made up dye baths and dipped the fabric in after we had scrunched it up to get crackle lines. We had to think hard about our next colour dip! We waxed again to keep the colour and then did a final dye dip. When the batiks were dry the wax was ironed out between sheets of newspaper and we had some awesome wall hangings.

About Our Mixed Media Collages.

Everyone in class made a mixed media collage. We used hessian and stitched a border first. We then drew our rock pool creatures with chalk and then stitched the outline. Coloured pieces of material were cut and glued inside the stitched shapes. We sewed on small beads for creatures eyes. Some of us learned to do chain stitch. When we decided that we had done enough sewing we glued the hessian picture to cardboard so we had a firm background. We then glued on sand and shells from the beach. We added glitter glue and stars to make our pictures look really interesting.

Our pictures were worked on over a ten week period. We are really proud of them!

The Rock Pools.

A hungry octopus lives behind a rock in a rock pool. A crab is hiding from the octopus. The octopus wants to munch the crab. The octopus is waving his tentacles because he is hungry. The crab feels scared. There are lots of creatures in the rock pools. The starfish is sucking water in and out to move its self around the rocks. It is looking for a mussel to munch.

I like looking in the rock pools at Pauanui.

Down Deep

Octopus have their mouths under their tentacles. They live under roocks and wait for their prey. When a fish comes by the octopus gets his tentacles out and grabs a fish and eats it all up. Starfish pump water in and out to walk. Neritas stick on rocks. Starfish come along and eat pipis and mussels. It must be scary living in the sea.

Down deep in the sea the giant clam is waiting for its prey. I think they look beautiful. We do not have giant clams in New Zealand. Starfish eat pipis. They pull until the pipi gets tired.
