New Zealand

At Te Puru School the children can almost reach out their classroom window and touch the sea. Every day at lunch time or play time you will find children on the beach.

Here are the poems and stories Room Six wrote for the Rocky Shore Project.

Hermit Crabs

Hermit crabs scavenge for food.

Enemies are seagulls.

Right now they are in their homes.

Marine scavengers they are.

In the rock pool the hermit crab hides in cracks.

The hermit crabs hide when enemies are around.

Coconut crabs are related to hermit crabs.

Rats are it's enemy.

Antenna feel around.

Bigger crabs are their enemies.

Catseye

Catseyes move into the sun when they are too cold,

And in amongst the rocky shore catseyes are food.

Two catseyes fidget over rocks.

Starfish eat catseyes.

Eyes on catseyes are not there.

Yours are in the water, catseyes are on it.

Eyes on catseyes are doors; our eyes are to see with.

Periwinkles

Periwinkles have got slippery tummies.

Eat lots.

Rocks are good for them.

If a periwinkle stays out.

Water is good for them.

It likes water.

No periwinkles can live on sand.

Kills things to eat.

Likes water.

Eats seaweed

Seaweed is good for them.

Chitons

Chitons live in seawater.

High tide.

They like it at low tide best.

On the rocks, you can find them.

Seawater is good for them.

Be careful where you put your hands

Shouting for food

Crabs walking side by side.

Walking to the rocks.

Rocky Shore Stories.

Starfish

Starfish live in rock pools. They stick to rocks. They sometimes live

right under water. Starfish's enemies are sea anemones and crabs. Starfish are

different kinds. Some starfish have more than 8 legs. If starfish break

their sides off, they grow another side back. Starfish look like sea biscuits.

Hermit Crabs

Hermit crabs are different from other crabs. The hermit crab battles for food.

It eats mussels. The hermit crab protects it self with a big shell. I like

hermit crabs they are cool. Hermit crabs battle with other hermit crabs over

the perfect shell. The hermit crabs live on the bottom of the rook pool.

The Hermit Crab

The hermit crab lives in an empty sea shells. As it grows the

hermit crab finds a bigger shell. The hermit crab does not lives in

it's own shell. The hermit crab has big and little nippers. The

hermit crab doesn't live in it's own shell. It steals from other

shellfish.

By Jaz

Starfish

Starfish are stars that live in a rock pool. They cry "Put me down, put me

down" when they shrivel up and die. Stars are up high, fish are down low. If

you put them all together you get a starfish.

By Hannah

Hermit Crabs

They fight over other hermit crabs for one shell. It moves into the empty

shell of another sea creature. The crab uses the thin end of its tail and two

pairs of tiny back legs to cling to the shell. The crabs fight lots and lots of

times. Hermit crabs have big nippers. Hermit crabs hate rats.
