Welcome

My name is Anton and I am a Black Ant, sometimes called a Harvester ant.
I don't like to stand still very much as you can see.

Diddley the dinosaur told me you might be coming to visit and asked me to be your guide while you're here.
I am very happy because I have lots of bug friends for you to meet.
Before we do that, let me tell some facts about me.

I am only about a half inch long, but some of us can be smaller.
I bite, I don't sting.
I can be red or dark brown in color.
I like to come to your picnics and eat everything sweet.
I also like to eat other bugs.
I live in tree trunks and anything wood. I can destroy all that wood, too, but I don't eat it, I just bore holes.
I am a very aggressive and fierce ant.
The only other ant as fierce and aggressive as me is the fire ant.
My scientific name is, HYMENOPTERA

Diddley told me about his friend that he talks with about science and asked me to tell you what his friend said about bugs.
"Bugs have exoskeletons. That means their skeleton is on the outside of their head. Some bugs have horns on their heads and they are called Three Horned Beetles. There are many bugs that can hurt humans like: Scorpions, Black Widow Spiders, Funnel Spiders, Wasps, and Bees. Some bugs are pests like: Ants, Mosquitos, Beetles and Roaches".
Wow, Diddley has some smart friends!

Now let's see who else we have here to tell you about.

Speaking of pests! This is a fly. There are many kinds of flies. Biting flies are: Horse flies which are kind of big and bite horses and cattle, the Black fly, the Dog fly which has a green head and bites dogs and humans, and the very, very tiny fly called a No-see-um that is as small as a speck of pepper. There is also the Housefly which does not bite but carries diseases. There are so many flies, I can't list all of them so these were just a few.

Oh, oh a spider. Can you see him? We have to keep it away from the fly because it will catch the fly, put it in a web and feed it to her babies. Spiders are not bugs, they are ARACHNIDS. Some dangerous spiders are: The Black Widow, The Brown Recluse, Tarantulas - the ones that come from Mexico the Caribbean and South America. There are spiders that aren't dangerous, like the Daddy long legs and others. All spiders are scary, though, don't you think so?

Everyone loves butterflies, but I don't know why we call them that, because they don't eat butter or flies! This one is a Monarch butterfly. It's big name is LEPIDOPTERA. Monarchs are about the only butterfly that migrates and can be found in many different parts of the world like, Eastern and Western U.S., Hawaii, Indonesia, Australia and Canada. They are first caterpillers that forms a chrysalis, then after some time a beautiful butterfly emerges. They like to eat flower nectar and some like to eat other things, like tree sap, fruit juices, wet mud or sand.

Beee careful, don't get stung!! This is a honeybee but again, there are many others such as, Bumblebees, yellow jackets, and sweat bees. Can you name some others? All bees belong in the group called HYMENOPTERA. You can tell the difference between a bumblebee and a honeybee by it's size and color. A bumblebee is large and furry and they make a loud buzzing sound when they fly. The honeybee is about a half inch long and it's stripes are a clear bright yellow with black in between. When you are at a picnic and you see a bee, it probably is a yellow jacket. If you see a bee or a swarm of bees, don't ever run because you will attract them and they can fly faster than you can run from them. And whatever you do, don't touch their nests, they really don't like that!

This is a beetle. There are so many beetles and they do some many different things. There's the lady bug. She is very good for farmers and your mom, if she likes to grow flowers, because they eat the aphids that eat the plants. A roach is a beetle. It's ugly and likes to scurry around in the dark and damp places and carries diseases. A blister beetle is a plant eater and if you touch it, it causes blisters. Here's a strange one, a bombardier beetle. They call is that because it can spray it's poison a great distance. So many beetles, I couldn't possible mention them all here.

And this? He's just a silly ole worm that wanted to be here for the tour.

DID YOU KNOW?

People who study bugs are called Entomologists?

A bug is an insect, but an insect is not necessarily a bug?

The word insect means "cut in"?

Well, I could talk all day about bugs and insects but I really must be getting back to my work of destroying wood. If you are interested is seeing some great bug and butterfly pictures and getting more information, I have a couple of great sites for you to visit, but remember, have mom and dad go with you because they like to see bugs too!

If you have a favorite bug,
or even if you know something Diddley didn't mention here,
you can sign his guestbook or send an email and tell him.
