The Huntress

The Huntress

Padding along under a clouded shroud of a moon
Cautiously she listens to the song of a loon
By the light can be seen a single lonely wolf
Quietly blending under the sky's shadowed roof

Listening intently to any noticeable sound
Knowing that her mate is equally bound
Softly she sighs inwardly with much relief
Stepping lightly over branch and leaf

Inwardly she hears her mate's silent call
Of the doe who's struting proudly and tall
As she comes to a break in the wooded glen
On the breeze the doe's senses begin to blend

By instinct the shewolf knows when to attack
Wolf strikes from behind as leader of this pack
The doe is left confused and looks all around
Suddenly the shewolf lunges from the background

Together they wrestle with their dying prey
Knowing the meat will last more than a day
Quickly they land her flat full on her back
Death comes quickly from their combined attack

Shewolf sadly sets back and howls at the moon
Carrying her sad message back to the lonely loon
She killed for survival in her habitat
For her offspring to carry on the legend of the pack
