Moon Dancer, my totem spirit has asked me to relay this story to you. Please take a moment and hear what she has whispered to me in the soft glow of the full moon...
Many moons ago, when the Great Grandfather created the stars and sky, He also created this land for man and animal to live in harmony and peace. In the beginning man and animal learned from one another and lived within their own boundaries. The Wolf lived in packs, much like man in their social community for most of their life. The Alpha pair, the main female and male lead the pack when hunting large weak and sickly prey such as bison, elk, moose and caribou. They will bring down a healthy animal if opportunity will present itself and there isn't other sicklier prey nearby. They usually stay within their own territory which may range 100 miles square. They have been known to travel up to 30 miles in a day, trotting along at 5 miles an hour but can travel at speeds of 45 mph.
The Alpha pair, the lead female and male wolf are responsible in deciding when and where to lead the pack in hunting and for maintaining the law within the community. They prove their dominance by body language, a lifted tail, eye contact, spatial distance. Their verbal communication consists of whining, barking, growling and the howl. Sometimes a Beta pair will challenge the Alpha for leadership of the pack, if they lose to dominance they will leave the pack and try to form their own. The sub-ordinate, or Omega wolf will show their submission by tucking their tail, or laying on their back and nuzzling the muzzle of the Alpha wolves. Generally, the male Alpha will lead the male wolves, and the female leads the female.
The Alpha wolves maintain a life-long relationship and begin mating by the time they are 2 or 3 years old. Normally, only the Alpha pair will mate and then the Alpha female will dig a den with many tunnels for her young pups. She will usually give birth in the early spring to a litter of four to six pups. At birth, a pup will weight about a pound, they'll be blind and are unable to maintain their body warmth. Therefore, for the first week of the pups life, the mother alpha will stay in the den to feed and keep them warm. All the wolves in the pack help with the care and feeding of the pups, often bringing back food and regurgitating it for the young to feed on. After the first few weeks the Alpha female will leave the den to resume her role in the hunt, leaving a sub-ordinate wolf to the care of the young pups.
As the pups grow they are allowed to roam the perimeter of the den, during play they are taught the mannerisms and behavior that is expected of them as part of the pack. During the latter part of their first year, they are taken out on the hunt and left on the sidelines to observe the teamwork of the pack to bring down a large prey. Around the age of one or two, the young wolf or disperser will leave and try to form their own pack in a different territory.
In days gone by life was very good for the wolf, then one day something happened to the spirit of man. Something new and ugly invaded his soul which took the life of many of my brethern. Whether it was fear of the wolf, or for lifting his pelt for money the wolf packs have slowly been depleted. It is now one of the species that are endangered, doomed for extinction unless man becomes educated to the plight of the wolf.
My brethern the wolf means no harm to man, they are more afraid of you, than you are of them. They only kill the sick and weak from your herds because your forefathers have destroyed their natural prey. They are one in spirit with the Native American because they know what it is to be hunted, killed and kept in captivity and having their lands taken from them. Please find it in your heart to give back the freedom and dignity of the wolf, and let them prosper. By allowing them their freedom, the wolf will help your herds flourish and continue to bring beauty into your children's future. |
This is Moon Dancer, my beautiful guardian wolf that followed me from Wolves Home. She's come here to watch over and greet all the wandering spirits that roam through this den. There's no need to be afraid! Look into her eyes...her spirit is one of natural curiosity, with the desire to roam free. She is an ancient soul, her bloodline can be traced back through your pet dog. The only difference between the two, Moon Dancer's bloodline hasn't been cross bred with a domesticated animal. To learn more about her and her kin, just follow her through this den!! |
