SHANGRILA

HEAVEN ON EARTH

SHANGRILA was established in 1983 at Kachura Lake (2440 Meters Height)Skardu in the North of

Pakistan. It was named Heaven on Earth because of its spectecular beauty, breathtaking view and

peaceful environments. SHANGRILA was named after a book entitled "Lost Horizon" by James Hilton.

The author, in this book, narrated a fictitious tale in which an airplane crash landed near a river bed in

the early 1920s. The surviving passengers were rescued by the Monks living nearby and took them

to a lamasery. This lamasery was very beautiful and filled with all sorts of fruits. Monks despite their

claims of being hundreds of years old looked very young.

THIS IDYLIC PLACE WAS CALLED "SHANGRILA", A CHINESE WORD MEANING

"HEAVEN ON EARTH".

Incidentally the tale turned into a reality when in 1950s an ORIENT AIRLINER'S DC-3 crash landed

in the bed of river INDUS. All souls on board including James Michener ,a famous writer ,survived.

This DC-3 stands parked today at SHANGRILA in Skardu, Pakistan. This is a unique tourist

attraction which has been converted into a cafe. The highest cafe in the World.
