Not much, judging by the test this dismayed lecturer put to his college classes. See if you can do better than they did.
When I started teaching a literature course at university, it immediately became apparent to me that most of the students had not the faintest idea about the basic who's who and what's what of our civilization. I had taken it for granted they knew some names, places and dates. I was wrong. Finally, I put a test together. The results were heartbreaking.
Unless more attention is paid in school to the essentials of history and literature, college professors will continue to waste most of their time filling in the basic facts.
Here are some of the questions from the test, given in three different years to three classes of 15 to 20 students, aged between 17 and 22. If you'd like to see how you stack up against them, try the quiz, then consult the answers.
