The Safest Summer Color Changes
If your hair is already:
scorched, the usual seasonal highlighting and
bleaching can leave your hair looking like straw come September.
But, that doesn't mean you're stuck with drab hues. Some safe options
from Beth Minardi at New York City's Minardi Salon:
Glazes
Low in peroxide and ammonia free, these salon treatments
|
brighten hair half a shade. Gold tones temper brassiness, red tones
temper warm ashiness.
Color Conditioner:
They beat shampoos in that they enhance color condition.
Our pick: JF Lazartigue Color Reflecting Hair
Conditioner. Its pigments last up to seven shampoos, but unlike
temporary color kits, it's ammonia and peroxide-free.
Gentle Showers
Keep brittle hair from breaking. Massage shampoo onto scalp, then
smooth suds (no scrubbing!} down the shaft.
Ways to lighten hair with the sun-- Safely
Sun-touched Highlights
seem an ideal summer hair-enhancer - until you run your fingers
through them. For results that feel irresitible:
DO limit sun exposure to a half hour daily.
DON'T douse with lemon juice. If you're blond,
apply it sparingly with toothbrush and a touch of baking soda.
"Just a few strands on top layer," says Witchita, Kansas salon
owner Eric Fisher. If hair is dark, skip this step, or you will
risk brassy streaks. The sun alone will create subtle highlights.
DO apply leave-in conditioner after sun exposure.
