This is an idea that my friend, Bev, brought back from the 1999 MEEC Convention in Las Vegas. We have been sharing the ideas in our Embroidery Club meetings. The vest at the convention won "most unusual item to be embroidered." I'm sorry I do not know who to give credit for this idea. (See msg. below) I used regular window screening, which is now made of a soft nylon type material. I embroidered several bugs from various sites, including Cookie's BBD site, Zari's, Hatswap, Rhonda Dorris and others. |

More bugs to resemble bugs on the screen on a summer night are on the back of the vest. I used a soft "army green" nylon fabric to make the binding and put it on with a blanket stitch. I had to be careful hooping the screen to avoid little holes showing up. I did not stabilize but used medical paper underneath to avoid scratching the bed of my machine; although I don't think it would have. The paper tore away from the designs easily. |

In keeping with the effect, I used a screen door hook as a fastener on the front of the vest. It was a big hit at our meeting and lots of fun to do. As you know, I enjoy doing the unusual. Now I'm shopping at the local hardware store! |
Recently I heard from Sharon Ramsay who started this idea, and here is her note to me. I am happy to give proper credit for a terrific idea.
Was looking thru the great ideas at your site & saw your note about embroidering bugs on window screening. It will be 2 years ago this August that I came up with this idea & created a class for my co-worker. I saw that someone at a craft show had stitched window screening into some tote bags & a jacket sort of garment that had pockets of bright plastic beads enclosed. So, I thought if you can sew on window screening, then we can embroider on it. I did use Solvy top & bottom for hooped embroidery, as well as for couching w/feed dogs. (Couched thick yarn as the flight path of bees.) I used all Cactus Punch insect designs to show Lindee Goodall at the Columbus OH sewing show that fall & it just took off from there when people saw it & the concept ended up at the MEEC Convention in Las Vegas.
