Well it was a very nice day to kick off the week on
camp. All of the children had a great time settling
into to their new surroundings. They all took
advantage of some free time with the trampolines
being the most popular activity on the first day.
Take a look at how the day went and then discover
what some of the children thought about it all by
reading the journal extracts....

Hungry Pelicans
at San Remo

This is a great little spot providing a gateway to Phillip Island.
The bus driver (Terry) told us that the town was originally
called "Sand Remo" but someone scratched out the d's on
the town signs some forty odd years ago and the name was
eventually adopted with the spelling change.

The  bridge from San Remo to Phillip Island

Here we saw pelicans being fed on the beach near the marina. There was some pretty serious
competition amongst these rather healthy looking big birds.

Everyone was invited to have lunch on the beach area and finish off with a bit of exploration.

Being taught the finer points about Koalas

Koalas!

On the way to camp we stopped into the Koala
Conservation Centre and had a fantastic guided tour of
a natural koala environment. The tour guide provided
us with many details about how a koala survives in the
wild and how we shouldn’t interfere with them.

The elevated walking platforms allowed us to get within
3 meters of a koala. He didn’t care too much about us
as he was asleep. Not surprising as we learnt that
koalas are only awake for about 4 hours per day!

The Camp

We arrived on time at the Christian Youth Camp
(CYC). The children were very excited. After the
induction lesson, everyone collected their
luggage and settled in. There was some brief
free time for all to try out the facilities and then
a surprise evacuation drill which was completed
without any problems.

Quiz time - a chance to win special treats!

Mr Pollard took us on a walk down to beach at
Cowes where it was up to us to find the most
interesting items washed up there. The top 5 items
were to be awarded prizes but this had to be
expanded to the top 7 because there were just too
many good finds to discount.

Dinner at the camp was a tasty Chicken Parmigina,
mashed potatoes, carrots and beans. Dessert was
peaches and pears in natural juices with vanilla ice-
cream. After that it was to time to write up journal
entries and then participate in some fun activities.

Supper was a rather large chocolate chip cookie and
hot chocolate….then off to bed!

Evening
activities

good nights
sleep (so the
teachers say!)

JOURNAL ENTRIES

This morning I got up very excited and I could
not wait to go to camp. Mum, Anthony and
Daniel all waived me goodbye as the bus
departed. On the bus many things happened
like people getting sick (including me) and
people getting really annoyed with the journey
because it was so long.
Jonathon

On Monday morning I arrived at school at 8:00,
the buses left eight forty five. We stopped at
Turedan for play lunch and then stopped at San
Remo for lunch. We watched the big pelicans
get fed. Then we went across the bridge to
Phillip Island and then we went to the Koala
thing opposite a maze and things. We saw a lot
of sleepy koalas. Then we went to camp.
Trent

The bus trip was long but we had some stops
along the way. One of the stops was San Remo.
We found heaps of photos and there was
pelicans. The pelicans were big and kind of
aggressive. When we got to the camp and got into
our cabins it was really exciting because I was
sleeping with my friends. After exploring and going
on the beach walk we had dinner. We had chicken
parmangama then for desert we had ice-cream.
Well that’s it for now but I think camp is pretty
good and its going to get better.

We went on a bus to Grade 5 Camp at the K.C.C.
It was very damp. We looked around and found
Koalas. To get there we went through a door. The
teachers got there as well as Mrs Pearce but get
on the wrong side and she’s Fierce (I am joking on
this line to get Mrs Pierce really fine). I went on the
trampolines and you should have heard the
screams. Well that’s what we did today and we
went to the bay!
Lachy

Today we had a long bus ride to our
camp Phillip Island. I sat up the back
with my friends. Mrs Pierce also sat
with us. We drew weird portraits of
different adults. So far the camp is
going really well. We have a room of 5
and we named our room “Get Lost” as in
if you come to our room we want you to
go away. This camp is starting off to be
fantastic, I hope it stays that way.

Today was the day we were finally going to camp. So we got
on the bus and waved goodbye to all of the mums and dads.
When the bus was going we all started talking and chatting
and singing while we were waiting for the next stop. We
arrived somewhere to have a break and go to the toilet.

Next we stopped at San
Remo to see the
pelicans. Then we
stopped at Phillip
Island to look at the
Koalas. Finally we got
to the camp and then
we unpacked our bags,
had an explore and

went down to the beach. We had some free time then some free duty groups. I had for dinner Chicken
Parmigiana, ice-cream, and then we got our Journals out and started writing. So far camp is all right.

Wow, this morning I was so excited . I said goodbye to Mum and Dad and hopped on the bus. Before I knew
it we were at out first stop. We all had playlunch and took a photo of my friends. We all hopped back on the
bus but there was a problem. We lost Sophie. When we found her we were off again. Our next stop was to
see the pelicans and have lunch. Then our last stop was the koala conservation centre. And had a hunt for
koalas. Then we finally arrived at camp. We checked out our cabins and had free time. Then we had a walk
down to the beach. After we had some more free time and then had some dinner and dessert. It turned out to
be a pretty good day!

What a day by Shirrelle
Driving on the bus, then suddenly we stopped for play lunch at
Toradin, then back on the bus for another 1 hour, then we
stopped at San Remo for lunch! Julie offered us fish and chips
but said she was out of money! Next we finally got to Phillip
Island and we went to the Koala conservation centre. We got
told that there was 34 koalas. Then we got to camp we talked
about where to play and where we can’t, after that talk we got
play free play. Then we went for a walk to the beach and after
that it was Dinner time.
Shirrelle

Hello. We went to camp today . So far we have had fun. I think. Anyway, we went to
Phillip Island C.Y.C (Cathlek Youth Camp). I have 6 people in my room, no wait 4, no 5,
no 3, yes 3. I’m with Darome, no Jarome, Sanieal, no Danial and Jcott, no Scott. But
camp is fun and I like it, I THINK !!!

Dear Diary, Today was a fantastic experience for me, I was on my
way to Phillip Island for grade 5 camp. I was hugging and blowing
kisses for my mum, I was on the bus for about 1 hour and then
stopped at Turedan for a bit of a walk and play lunch. Then we
got back on the bus and went straight to the Koala reserve, we
saw 7 Koalas. We FINILLY got to camp. We went to our lodges
and had dinner. We wrote in our diaries and here I am now.

                           Yaaaa! Today is camp.
I  can’t wait to get on the
bus first and go but first we
have to say goodbye to our
parents which was very sad but that was
okay. We have a lot to see and do. After
about 50 min on the bus we stopped at
Toredan witch was near the beach. We had
a look at the crabs and shells then we got
on the bus and headed for Sand Remo. We
went to a koala centre. Some of the koalas
were so cute. We also saw lots of paligans
there. They were really big. I was so happy I
couldn’t wait to get to camp. It was going to
be really, really fun. When we finally arrived
I couldn’t wait to do all of these fun activities.
