March 5, 1932 BA-J/MLB Mr. Stuart P. Dobbs David Eccles Building Ogden, Utah Dear Sir: Reference is made to your letter of recent date, relative to Chesley Dobbs, a soldier of the Revolutinary War. The data which follow are obtained from the papers on file in pension claim, W. 917, based upon the military service o Chesley or Chesly Dobbs, in the Revolutionary War. Chesley or Chesly Dobbs was born in Culpeper County, Virginia, date not stated. While residing in Culpeper County, Virginia, he enlisted sometime in 1776, served at various times, nine months in all, until the fall of 1779, as a private in Captain Tutt's company, Colonel Edward Stephens' Virginia regiment. In 1779, he moved to Burke County, North Carolina, and while living there volunteered and served ten days as a private in Captain Dobson's company, Colonel Lock's North Carolina regiment, and was in the battle of Ramsour's Mill. After returning home, he was taken prisoner in August, 1780, on his own plantation, but was paroled by the Tory officer, Colonel Husbands, and remained on parole to the close of the war. He was allowed pension on his application executed June 19, 1833, while a resident of Claiborne County, Tennessee, aged eighty-four years. He died January 25, 1834, in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Soldier married December 25, 1784, in Faquier County, Virginia, Hannah whose maiden name was not given. Pension was allowed on the application of soldier's widow, Hannah, which application was executed November 14, 1838, at which time she was living in Claiborne County, Tennessee, aged eighty-four years.
