Dinosaur Poems

206

A grown-up human being has approximately
Two hundred and six different bones
In his or her body.
Can you imagine, then, how many different bones
A huge Tyrannosaurus rex would have?

Well, a Tyrannosaurus rex
Has approximately
Two
Hundred
And six
Different bones
In his or her body -
Same as us.

Hmmmmm…

Unfortunately
Bobbi Katz

Dinosuars lived so long ago,
They never had a chance to know
How many kids would love to get
A dinosaur to be their pet.

What If . . .
Isabel Joshlin Glaser

What if . . .
You opened a book
About dinosaurs
And one stumbled out
And another and another
And more and more pour
Until the whole place
is bumbling and rumbling
And groaning and moaning
And snoring and roaring
And dinosauring?

What if . . .
You tried to push them
Back inside
But they kept tromping
Off the pages instead?
Would you close the covers?

Long Gone
Jack Prelutsky

Don't waste your time in looking for
The long-extinct tyrannosaur,
Because this ancient dinosaur
Just can't be found here anymore.

This also goes for stegosaurus,
Allosaurus, brontosaurus
And any other saur or saurus.
They all lived here long before us.

Dreamscape
Lillian M. Fisher

A giant came into my dream
And thundered to and fro.
As thender-lizareds often do
He traveled high and low.
He shool the hills and mountaintops
And spilled the seven seas.
He drank eleven rivers,
He ate a hundred trees.
But even thunder-giants sleep -
He wandered off to find his bed.
I didn't notice where he went,
I simply, quickly, woke instead!

Dinoaur
Margaret Hillert

The dinosaur,
The dinosaur,
Was once
But isn't
Anymore.

If it were,
You must agree,
Then you
And I
Just wouldn't be.

I confess
It's much more pleasant
To know
That he's
The one who isn't.

Lines on a Small Potato
Margaret Fishback

Reflect upon the dinosaur,
A giant that exists no more.
Though brawny when he was alive,
He didn't manage to survive,
Whereas the unimpressive flea
Continues healthy as can be;
So so not whimper that you're small -
Be happy that you're here at all.

from Company
Bobbi Katz

I'm fixing a lunch for a dinosaur.
Who knows when one might come by?
I'm pulling up all the weeds I can find.
I'm piling them high as the sky.
I'm fixing a llunch for a dinosaur.
I hope he will stop by soon.
Maybe he'll just walk down my street
And have some lunch at noon.

When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth
Patricia Hubbel

Brontosaurus, diplodicus, gentle trachodon
Dabbled in the muds of time
Once upon, upon.

Tyrannosaurus raised his head
And rolled his evil eye
Bared his long and yellow teeth
And bid his neighbors 'bye.
His pygmy brain was slow to grasp
The happenings of the day.
And so he roamed and slew his friends
And ate without delay.

Brontosaurus, diplodicus, gentle trachodon
Dabbled in the muds of time
Once upon, upon.

Alloaurus awed his foe.
He awed his friends who passed.
His teeth were made for tearing flesh
His teeth were made to gnash.
Taller than a building now.
Taller than a tree,
He roamed about the swamp-filled world
And ate his company.

Brontosaurus, diplodicus, gentle trachodon
Dabbled in the muds of time
Once upon, upon.

Eaters of their friends and foe
Or dabblers in the slime
Their pygmy brains were slow to grasp
Once upon a time.

Brontosaurus
Garil Kredenser

The giant brontosaurus
Was a prehistoric chap
With four fat feet to stand on
And a very skimpy lap.
The scientists assure us
Of a most amazing thing -
A brontosaurus blossomed
When he had a chance to sing!

(The brigger brontosauruses,
Who like to sing in choruses,
Would close their eyes
And harmonize
And sing most anything.)

They growled and they yowled,
They deedled and they dummed;
They warbled and they whistled,
The howled and they hummed.
They didn't eat, they didn't sleep;
They sang and sang all day.
Now all you'll find are footprints
Where they tapped the time away!

A Dinosaur at the Door
Helen H. Moore

Would you open your door
To a dinosaur?
Would you open it wide and say, "Hi"?
Would you welcome him in?
Would you say with a grin,
"I'm so terribly glad you came by"?

If you did, you might find
That it pays to be kind,
For a dinosaur makes a great pet.
They're big, and they're fun,
They go "thump" when they run,
And they don't mind if you
Get them wet!
So open your door
To a big dinosaur,
And welcome him into your home.
Give your parents a shock,
Be the first on your block
With a home where the dinosaurs roam!

Dinosaurs
Meish Goldish

Dinosaurs, dinosaurs,
Where have you been?
I've only seen you
In books that you're in.
Dinosaurs, dinosaurs,
Why aren't you here?
I want to know what
Made you all diasappear!

Dinosaurs, dinosaurs,
How you would roam!
Forests and beaches
Were your private home.
Dinosaurs, dinosaurs,
How you could eat!
Dining on plant life
Or dining on meat.

Dinosaurs, dinosaurs,
Where did you go?
Once you were giants,
And how you did grow!
Dinosarus, dinosaurs,
What made you die?
So many guesses,
But no one's sure why.

Dinosaur Bones
Nancy Klein

Let's look for bones,
dig, dig, dig.
Dinosaur bones,
big, big, big.

Back to the lab,
zip, zip, zip.
Clean the bones,
chip, chip, chip.

Put them together,
so, so, so.
We've built a dinosaur,
oh, oh, HO!

Pretend
Nancy Klein

Spread your arms, way out wide,
Fly like a Pteranodon, soar and glide

Bend to the floor, head down low,
Move like Stegosaurus, long ago.

Reach up tall, try to be
As tall as Apatosaurus eating on a tree.

Use your claws, grumble and growl
Just like Tyrannosaurus on the prowl.

Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs lived long ago.
They were so big and strong, you know!
Sharp teeth and claws, long tails too.
Some that walked and some that flew.
Though they don't live here, anymore,
We still adore the dinosaur!

Dinosaur
Stuart Stotts

A dinosaur knocked at my door
I said, "I've never seen your type before."
He said, "I'm new in this time, so could you help me find
a few other creatures of my kind?"
I said "My friend, come on in.
The story has a very sad end.
All the ones who came before us
like Stego, Tyro and Brontosaurus
Have vanished into ancient ooze.
I'm sorry to have to break the news.
But the mighty creatures who trampled the soil
are now just fossils, dust and oil.
Why they went, no one can say.
But you won't find them here today."
He was very sad. He looked so bad
I gave him all the Koolaid that I had.
After he drank, he said, "Well, thanks"
But I could see that his spirit sank.
He said "Good-bye", and walked down the street.
He left his footprints in the concrete.
I wonder if I'll ever see him
in a zoo, or a museum.
I'd take him in, but he's colossal.
What can you do with a living fossil?
