Got so much e-mail with question on angels that I put this together with some of the answer.
I don't claim to know all the answer so I will answer as best as I can. I always go the the Bible first!

ABOUT THE ANGELS

Angels are spiritual creatures who glorify God
without ceasing and who serve His saving plans for others.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

1. DO ANGELS REALLY EXISTS?
The existence of angels - a truth of faith.
(328) The existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture
usually calls "angels" is a truth of faith.
The witness of Scripture is as clear as the unanimity of Tradition.

WHAT DO ANGELS DO?
(329) With their whole beings the angels are the servants and messengers of God.
Because they "always behold the face of my Father who is in Heaven" they are the
"mighty ones who do His word, hearkening to the voice of His word."
SEE; Matthew, 18:10, Psalms,103:20

CAN ANGELS THINK AND ACT FOR THEMSELVES?
(330) As purely spiritual creatures angels have intelligence and will:
they are personal and immortal creatures, surpassing in perfection all visible creatures, as the splendor of their glory bears witness

DO ANGELS HAVE A GENDER?
They are spiritual creatures, who are neither male or female.
We as humans often give angels a gender. That is fine as long as we remember that they are spiritual beings. Most people think of angels as female, as I often do.
Why? My guess is that we see woman as the gentle one.
But in the Bible the names seem to be male:
The Archangels, Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, and Saint Raphael (archangel which appears in human form to Tobias and travels with him. Tobias, 5:11)
But are they male names or did the translation of the meaning of each name just give it a male sounding name?

WHO DO THEY SERVE?
Servants of Christ!
CHRIST "with all His angels"
They were there to announced the Birth of Christ, they were with Him from the incarnation to the Ascension, the life of the Word is surrounded by the adoration and service of angels.
When God "brings His firstborn into the world, He says: 'Let all God's angels worship him.'"
Their song of praise: "Glory to God in the highest!"
They protect him in his infancy, serve him in the desert, strengthen Him in His agony in the garden. SEE: Luke, 1:11,22; Hebrew, 1:6; Luke 2:14
What most people tend to forget is that Christ is the center of the angelic world.
They are HIS angels:"When the Son of man comes in glory , and all the angels with Him...." Matthew, 25:31
They belong to him because they were created through Him and for him:
"for in Him all things were created in Heaven and on Earth, visible and invisible..."
Colossians 1:16

HOW DO THEY SERVE HIM?
They belong to him still more because he has made them messengers of His saving plan:
"Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?" Hebrew 1:14
It is the angels who "evangelize" by proclaimimg the Good News of Christ's Incarnation and resurrection.
They will be present at Christ's return, which they will announce, to serve at his judgment.
SEE: Acts, 1:10-11 Matthew, 13:41; 24:31; Luke 12:8-9

GUARDIAN ANGELS
"Behold I will send my angel, who shall go before thee, and keep thee in thy journey,
and bring thee into the place that I have prepared..." Exodus, 23:20-23

WHAT ARE GUARDIAN ANGELS?
They are guradians of nations and individuals and acts as intercessors who present the prayers of humans beings to God.
When we walked through crowded streets, enter a Church, or any place where numbers of people are assembled, we should take time to salute all the Guardian Angels present.
(336) From infancy to death human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession.
"Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life."
Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and people united in God.
SEE: Matthew, 18:10; Luke, 16:22; Psalms, 34:7: 91:10-13; Job, 33:23-24 Zech., 1:12; Tobit 12:12.
My favorite "See that you despise not one of these little ones:
for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always
see the face of my Father who is in heaven." Matthew, 18:10

WHO ELSE BENEFITS FROM THE ANGELS?
The Church and the people.
Meanwhile, the Church and the lives of all the people benefits from the mysterious and prowerful help of angels.
SEE: Matthew, 13:41; 24:31; Luke 12:8-9; Acts 1:10-11

Saint Micheal does battle aganist evil to save souls at all times.
(1034) Jesus often speaks of "Gehenna," of "the unquenchable fire" reserved for those who to the end of their lives refuse to believe and be converted, where both body and soul is lost. Jesus solemnly proclaims that he "will send his angels, and they will gather...all evil doers, and throw them into the furnace of fire,"
SEE: Matthew, 5:22,29; 10:28; 13:42,50; Mark9:43-48; Matthew, 13:41
We need to pray daily to Saint Michael to protect us against the evils of this world.

PRAYER TO OUR GUARDIAN ANGEL
O Most Holy Angel of God,
appointed by Him to be my guardian, I give thee thanks for all the benefits which thou hast ever bestowed on me in body and in soul. You assist me with such patient fidelity and defend me against all the assaults of my enemies. Blessed be the hour in which thou was assigned to me for my guardian, my defender and my patron. In acknowledgement of and in return for all thy loving ministries to me from my youth up, I offer thee the infinitely precious and noble Heart of Jesus and firmly purpose to most faithfully serve my God.
