What good is the
Space Program?

1964 was a very exciting year. We had just seen both the Ranger 7 and the Mariner 4 make very successful journeys, sending data back to start unfolding the mysteries that surrounded space exploration for centuries. 1965 would prove even more exciting. The last 2 of the scheduled Ranger Missions would take place.

In addition, the Gemini Program, nicknamed "On the Shoulders of Titans",would launch, carrying 2 man teams into space. We were going to learn a new term: EVA (extra vehicular activity). We were making great strides.

The soviets were making great strides as well.  In 1964 they had sent the first multi-man team into space. This year they would beat us to the punch on spacewalks as well.

(information concerning probes coming very soon. In addition, we will be doing sections on the individual probes, and a piece on both the NASA and Soviet Rockets that lifted -or attemped to lift- these probes into space. All of that information is important to understand why there were problems.)
